The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 2)
PART THREE: ORANGE GROVE, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 2
Howie sat down in his recliner. I glanced his way.
Police work had aged him but he was still good looking in a rugged way. His shock of brown hair was peppered with gray. In profile his features suggested strength, green eyes behind heavy lids, a straight nose, a well manicured mustache, a nicely shaped mouth and a strong jutting chin. His husky frame was in good shape because he worked out with weights in the department’s exercise room nearly every day.
He picked up the clicker and turned off the television. Then he picked up his glass, took a drink and set it down again. He looked straight at the blank television screen as if it was still on.
“Wanna drink?” he asked.
“No thanks.”
A full minute passed.
“So, what’s going on?” he asked without looking at me.
“You had some questions you wanted to ask me?“
“Yeah, I wanna know what you and Bette did in Maui?”
I took in a deep breath and then looked down at my hands, laying loosely in my lap. “What Bette and I did started a long, long time ago Howie.”
“Did you sleep with her?”
I waited a moment and then quietly said, “Yes.”
“How long have you been sleeping with her?”
“In my mind or actually?”
He let air out of his lungs as if in exasperation and began shaking his head. Then he looked at me. “What the fuck is wrong with you, Sissee?” he asked with controlled anger.
“Nothing is wrong.” I looked him directly in the eyes and was surprised at my own calm demeanor. “In fact, I am finally in touch with my own feelings and everything inside of me feels right. I know I have issues to face with my family but trust me Howie, everything inside is finally right.”
“If that means what I think it does then all I can say is that you need psychiatric help.”
“I’m only gay Howie. I’m not nuts.”
“You are not fucking gay.”
“What makes you so sure?”
“Because I know better unless you’ve been faking it all these years.”

That’s scarey. You never really know what people will do when they drink alot. Even though Sissee’s seen him confrontional before, this has him really pissed. I would be afraid of him coming after me with a gun or physically abusing me. I think I would take Mary & leave & talk to him again when he’s sober. Thanks Sissee.
Kbergin47, The verbal hits that Howie made were probably worse than any physical blows he may have inflicted. The situation has brought out a mean side that Sissee never saw before but she has taken him to the edge and it becomes – you are hurting me, so I am hurting you back – kind of thing. Perhaps he will be less hateful in the morning.
Hi Sissee the writer, I am so into the storyline this time that I forgot I was on page 5 and the chapter was over already. I hope Mary will understand her mother, she seemed like a compassionate person. I don’t like Howie since Day 1. I know you, the writer, felt sorry for him and thought he’s always a good man. I know he was nice to Bette for Sissee’s sake only. Anyhow, the alcohol in him would definitely give him courage to say what he felt. That’s the dysinhibition of our thinking and feeling when we are not sober. It served good purpose sometimes – Sissee saw the real Howie now because of that…
Bette’s Babe, Yes, Howie finally told Sissee what he thinks of Bette Porter and her lifestyle. He finally told her HIS truth, the kind of bigoted truth that is out there unfortunately, shared by shallow people who don’t even try to understand. It’s getting better though and you just wait for our Bette Porter here to stand up to this Howie person. They will have a show down, very soon.
