The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 2)
He continued, “The whole thing disgusts me even to think about it. So I try to block it out of my mind.” He raised his hands to his head and clutched his temples momentarily.
He was nervous. He was agitated. He broke the position and picked up his glass saying, “I need another drink.” He got up and went to the kitchen. I heard him refresh his glass with ice at the freezer side of the refrigerator doors. We stored the booze in a top cupboard. He brought down his bottle of Chivas Regal and poured a generous amount. Glug. Glug. Glug. He added water from the tap. Then he came back and sat down, taking a long drink.
I knew Howie was capable of getting very argumentative when he drank too much. He was ordinarily not a heavy drinker but on those rare occasions when he had too much, he was sometimes in my face challenging me beyond reason no matter what the subject was. I had no idea how much he had consumed before I came home but I was uncomfortable with it now and knew this could all get out of hand.
My best instincts urged me to simply tell him we would talk in the morning and I would go to Mary’s room and sleep with her. However, he needed to say what was on his mind and it seemed that the amber liquid fueled his courage.
“I never liked Bette,” he said. “I always thought she was arrogant, a selfish prima donna wrapped up in her own world.”
“You seemed to get along with her. You kidded each other.”
“We tolerated each other.”
“You never said anything about our visits with she and Tina.”
“That was for your sake and no other reason.”
“So you resented those times that we entertained them here or they had barbecues at their house?”
“I said I did it for your sake. What possible interest would I have had in two dykes otherwise? “ His voice was sloppy and getting louder. “That’s how stable they are by the way, going from one woman to the next. Is that what you want to do? Or maybe switch off between men and women like Tina‘s doing?”

That’s scarey. You never really know what people will do when they drink alot. Even though Sissee’s seen him confrontional before, this has him really pissed. I would be afraid of him coming after me with a gun or physically abusing me. I think I would take Mary & leave & talk to him again when he’s sober. Thanks Sissee.
Kbergin47, The verbal hits that Howie made were probably worse than any physical blows he may have inflicted. The situation has brought out a mean side that Sissee never saw before but she has taken him to the edge and it becomes – you are hurting me, so I am hurting you back – kind of thing. Perhaps he will be less hateful in the morning.
Hi Sissee the writer, I am so into the storyline this time that I forgot I was on page 5 and the chapter was over already. I hope Mary will understand her mother, she seemed like a compassionate person. I don’t like Howie since Day 1. I know you, the writer, felt sorry for him and thought he’s always a good man. I know he was nice to Bette for Sissee’s sake only. Anyhow, the alcohol in him would definitely give him courage to say what he felt. That’s the dysinhibition of our thinking and feeling when we are not sober. It served good purpose sometimes – Sissee saw the real Howie now because of that…
Bette’s Babe, Yes, Howie finally told Sissee what he thinks of Bette Porter and her lifestyle. He finally told her HIS truth, the kind of bigoted truth that is out there unfortunately, shared by shallow people who don’t even try to understand. It’s getting better though and you just wait for our Bette Porter here to stand up to this Howie person. They will have a show down, very soon.
