The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 3)
PART THREE: ORANGE GROVE, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 3
I led Mary to the bar chairs at the kitchen counter. Many is the time that she and I had conversations there. It was our place to communicate openly with each other when no one else was around. It was our comfort zone. We would sit with our knees under the counter and sometimes swivel toward each other, knees touching, heads together in quiet mother-daughter confidence. How many times had she asked my advice as I listened to her youthful dilemmas? And how many times had we talked it through, as best we could? It was the place we went to discuss personal growing-up issues, teenage angst, happy moments and sad.
Well, now it was my turn to go to her with my situation and for her to hear me through.
I waited a moment after we sat down. She looked at me curiously. I had practiced in my mind how I would tell the kids but I knew it would not come out that way.
“This is where we’ve always been open and honest with each other,” I said, looking at her. “Right?”
She nodded.
“Well, that’s why I came in here, to talk to you about something that is going to affect us all.“
Mary blinked with concern but quietly waited for me to go on.
I continued. “The first thing I want to do is reassure you that I love you very much and no matter what happens to this family, I will always love you.
“I know I’m one special thing to you, first and foremost and that’s your mom. We have a close relationship and I hope it will stay that way forever because you are very important to me and I need you in my life.
“You also see me as your dad’s wife. I’ve been that person too but there is another part of me whom you’ve never met and that’s…..that’s who I really am.
“It’s very important for you to understand that this is in no way to put your father down. Tonight he’s troubled and with good reason but basically he’s been a good husband, a good provider and a good father to you kids. You know he loves each of you in his own way, just as I do, in mine.

Howie’s still passed out, that’s a good thing. Mary seemed to take it well, I hope it stays that way. I’m curious to find out how Charlie will take it. Thanks for the quick post.
Kbergin47, Thanks for your comment. I try to post every 300 hits. Sometimes it’s fast, sometimes it’s slow but it’s a good guideline for me.
wooo 2 post so soon that’s cool. My theory on the following chapters is that I think that mary will go with Sissee and after serie 22 they will form a cute little family with bette and ang. She is going to like to be big sis. Sis other childeren will still love her but they won’t life with her. That’s so sad and painfull…but that’s my version of the story. I can’t wait to see what will happen next! Thanks again.
September, I love your versions of the story as we progress. You may be on to something regarding Mary. I will tease you a little and not say for sure. You might be right about the boys too. As for it being sad and painful, yes it is. You are spot on there!
Sissee, not surprisingly, I enjoy reading this chapter again. I also made a good hunch about Mary would be accepting of her mom’s “secret”, albeit a bit of shock re: her mom being gay. Sissee had taken an important role to explain things to Mary, she said a lot of things to her in order for her to understand her situation. I guess Charlie may have more of a difficult time to understand his mom. I am staying tuned to the next chapter.
Bette’s Babe, Mmmm. Does that mean you read the chapter twice? There is a lot to be said about mothers and daughters and fathers and sons. Since you all have those two aced, Mary and Charlie, what about Kyle? None of it is easy and these kids are each at a tender age where they are quick to judge and it may take years to sort it all out in their minds.
I’m just wondering if any of you can relate. It seems a lot read and never comment. Surely some of you have had similar experiences.
