    Survival: Chapter 4

“God, that seems so soon,” Alice said, her heart sinking as she realised what Dana would soon be facing.  The injections, the nausea, the hair loss; the constant feeling that her whole identity was being taken from her.  And, now, the added fear that this treatment could actually bring about a faster death through infection.  It was terrifying for Alice to think about; she could only imagine how it made Dana feel.

“I know,” Shane replied sadly.  “On the other hand, I guess it’s a good sign that he thinks she’s healthy enough to be able to handle the chemo again.  The problem is, she’s not taking it very well.  After we left his office, she started talking about not going on it.”

“What?” Alice asked, her voice rising with her shock.  “What do you mean, she doesn’t want to go back on the chemo?  Is she insane?”

“I think she’s just scared, Al,” Shane explained softly, casting her eyes downward as she remembered her conversation with Dana after they had left Dr. Bauer’s office.  Dana had been terrified at the prospect of going on chemo again; and, although Shane had done everything she could think of to calm her down and make her see the situation rationally, she hadn’t been able to make her change her mind.

“Well, of course she’s scared,” Alice said angrily.  “That fucking chemo nearly killed her.”

Shane nodded sombrely. “I think she’s terrified that the same thing will happen again, except she won’t be as lucky next time.”

“But, the alternative isn’t any better,” Alice said, thinking aloud.  She was quiet for a moment, before looking up at Shane with a hurt expression.  “Why didn’t she tell me?” she asked, already suspecting the answer to her question.

“Well, I think partly she was worried about talking to you about this after the whole Lara thing hit the fan the other day,” Shane replied honestly.  “But, mostly I think she had some crazy idea that not telling you would protect you in some way.”

“Fuck, what was she thinking?” Alice said in frustration.  “Obviously, I would have heard about this sooner or later.”

“I know,” Shane agreed, shaking her head.  “I tried to tell her she was being an idiot, but I got the impression that she thought that by not telling you about it, she could keep the idea of going on chemo again from being totally real.”

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
