“Alice I need to go to the bathroom.” Carmen said. “I’ll see you later Susan.” She walked up the stairs.

The three looked at each other. Dana followed Shane out to the beach while Alice went to the room. Susan just shrugged and went to the kitchen.

Alice knocked onto the guest room door a few times.

“Carmen can I come in?” No reaction from the other side.

“Ok so I take that as a yes.” Alice opened the door. Carmen was sitting on the bed with her back facing the door.

“Hey what’s wrong pal?” Alice sat beside her best friend and wrapped her arm around her shoulder.

“I don’t know Al; I’m just not ready to see her again!” Carmen exclaimed.

“Her? What you mean Shane is the…” Alice was cut off by Carmen.

“Yes Alice now I present to you ‘the dumbest thing I have ever met’ the one I always told you.”

“Oh my god so it’s Shane.”

Carmen sighed and rubbed her temples. “I don’t know if I could still go through dinner with her around.”

“Please at least try Carmen. Susan has been so excited that you came for visit she couldn’t stop talking about you for weeks and Dana she was eager to see you too.”

“Ok ok I will try to be civil. Just for the three of you.”

“Thanks. Now tell me how you two met.”

Carmen tilted her head slightly to see her friend grinning like a five year old. She chuckled and shook her head.

Dana didn’t know what to do besides holding the box of Kleenex close to Shane so that her friend had no problem reaching it. She always thought she would laugh non stop at the sight of Shane blowing her nose with the tissue paper after crying uncontrollably but it wasn’t the case in reality. It was the first time she saw her friend’s heart broken.

“I met her during an internship in a law firm in New York.” Shane reached for the tissue and blew her nose.

“She was doing her intern too and we quickly developed feelings for each other. I really thought that I had found my other half. I asked her to move in with me after we both completed our interns but you know what she said?” She looked at Dana with teary eyes. Dana was dumbstruck all she could do was to shrug her shoulders.
