Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“Bette Porterrrrrrrrrrrr!!” Sam shouted for the nth time.

“I’m here, I’m here.” Bette mumbled, walking to the back of her car and popping open the trunk.

“Where the heck have you been?”

“In my head.” Bette muttered, ignoring the bittersweet pang she felt from reliving the memory as she bent down and gathered up her tools, setting them down on the pavement while she assembled the triangular early warning sign that she kept for emergencies like this one.

    “What?”

    “Nothing.”

“You haven’t answered my question yet..” Sam picked up from where she left of before Bette zoned out, ready to order her friends beside her to send for help if her bestfriend gave a negative answer. “Do you know how to change a-”

“I do.” Bette interrupted, placing the emergency reflector a few feet away from her parked car. There were no other cars in sight, but it was better to be safe than sorry. “I hung out at the garage sometimes, remember?”

“I know.” Sam said. “But I thought you only just watched the experts work on your car and boss them around from the sidelines. Never imagined you as one to do the dirty work.”

“That’s cause I didn’t.” Bette sighed, walking back to her car and cranking out the spare tire from its hidden compartment below the trunk. “I only asked Freddie to teach me how to change tires when..” She paused, looking sadly at the tire as she put on a pair of workman’s gloves.

    “When-?” Sam pressed.

“When I needed to teach Kennard how to change one.”

Twenty minutes later, at the other side of the country.

    The Planet, West Hollywood.

“Are you sure you don’t want a burger? If I remember correctly, it was your favorite..”

Tina looked up from reading an email on her laptop and smiled at the beautiful woman hovering over her table. “Tempting, but I would have to say no.” She sighed longingly. Only five days into her short trip to LA and she already gained three pounds from all the indulging she did. When she actually had to suck in her tummy just to fit into her Levi’s this morning, she stomped over to her list and snuffed out the second item with a vengeance.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
