Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

It took Ken another twenty minutes before he broke out of his contemplative state.

Thankfully for the sanity of his nervous daughter, the reaction she got was the latter.

“A break..” Ken mumbled silently, as if he was speaking to himself, his face showing no signs of anger or the hate that Tina claimed she felt for Bette.

Tina looked at her father intently, studying his reaction. The moment she figured out what his mood was, she released the breath she was holding in. Thank God, she really didn’t think she had it in her to pacify a rampaging man tonight. “A break..” She mimicked, relaxing into the couch.

“A break, huh?” Ken muttered again, stroking his chin in thought. Looking sideways at his daughter, he pursed his lips and reached for something on top of the coffee table. “Here, have a–”

“Don’t.” Tina warned, her eyes shooting daggers at Ken.

    “But-”

“Don’t you dare, Daddy.” The young woman folded her arms across her chest. “Don’t even say it.. don’t even think it.”

“But its funny..” Ken tried to reason out, his deep male voice betraying the start of a whine.

“No its not.” Tina countered. “Its really not.” She insisted when she saw his mouth opening in protest.

    “But-”

“Say it and die.” Tina threatened with a look that could cut through glass – or just her father’s thin resolve.

“Okay.. fine..” Ken relented dejectedly, putting back the bar of Kit-Kat on the coffee table. Once again, his ill attempt at humor got shot down before he can even say the kicker. “Sorry..” He mumbled, scratching the back of his head. “Cheetos?”

Tina looked at his peace offering for a split-second and grabbed it from her father without hesitation. Yeah yeah.. she was easy. “Thanks old man.”

    “Don’t mention it Lumpy Luna.”

Tina dropped her jaw in shock, causing pieces of her favorite snack to jump out the bag when she accidentally opened it too fast and hard. “Who you calling lumpy Luna?!”

“Why, you. Fat ass.” Ken stuck out his tongue like the big kid he was, grabbing a fallen Cheeto from Tina’s lap and throwing it inside his waiting mouth. He knew how his daughter was prone to binge on junk food when she was depressed; he was concerned, but oftentimes, that concern of his manifested itself as playful ribbing – much to Tina’s chagrin.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
