Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)
“…”
“I believe you even said that you’ll answer every single one of my questions..” Ken said in a sing-song voice, earning a groan from the caller. “So, question one.. what’s this I hear about you and Bette breaking-up? Did that really happen?”
“Jesus..” Tina made a face and looked helplessly out the window for some sort of divine intervention. She just asked for this didn’t she? Tina exhaled loudly and frowned at the impatient tapping that was coming from the steering wheel. Man, this was going to be a long drive home.

Later..
Kennard Apartment, Los Angeles.
Although initially proud of the fact that she traveled light during this one week trip back home, Tina began to wish that she had packed more things – if only to prolong the whole unpacking process and give her more time to herself inside her old bedroom. Don’t get her wrong, she missed Ken and enjoyed his company immensely – but him being silent from the moment she told him a condensed version of her and Bette’s current situation until the time they got home unnerved her in more ways than one. He was acting this way just by knowing partial details, what more if he knew the whole truth? Tina didn’t tell him about Bette seeing a therapist and the trauma she had experienced three years prior, because knowing Ken, his fatherly instincts would compel him to call Melvin and tell him all about it. And Tina didn’t want that. It was Bette’s secret to tell, and when she was ready to share things with her own father and his weak heart, then she would have to be the one to tell him and no one else.
Wordlessly, Ken had sat on the living room sofa the second they entered the apartment door, patting the seat beside him as a way to tell Tina that he wanted her there after she had finished freshening up and unloading her things from the bag. She had done just that, and now here they were, spending the last few minutes of the afternoon in relative silence. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife. Tina didn’t have the nerve to push her father into speaking; knowing that it was his way of dealing with things and coming into terms with them inside his mind. His mood when he snapped out of his silent world would tell Tina just how he felt about the whole thing. Angry was bad, livid was worse; those reactions only meant that the shotgun under his bed would come out of hiding if ever Bette mustered up enough courage to show her face in here. Calm was nice, smiling and joking was better; a jovial mood was always an indication that the former farmer from North Carolina had gained some semblance of acceptance and had made peace with the whole situation – as best as a disappointed father could, that is. After all, he could shout and threaten all he want, but at the end of the day, it was Bette and Tina’s problem and they had the last say. His role in the whole thing was to provide guidance and to give advice when need be, and of course, be a shoulder to cry on when his daughter needed one.

My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)
thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.
You made me so happy on a Monday morning! That was a hard feat for anybody else but you’vr done it! :) Onto the next chapter… Thanks!
Close to 15 and 3/4 LOL. That was a beauty of a car. I love toblerone! Now I must move on to the next post. Thanks alch.
wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..
I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!
Great chapter!Now I think I’ll start loving Mondays:)Thank you for a fabulous update.:D
Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!
Wow that was great! Excuse me while I read the next part. I will say your bette is soooooo sweet
Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)
Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
That was awesome, love seeing Ken and Tina together again.
