“I don’t have any excuse mother. I was in my own world; totally self-absorbed but in my defense she hid it from everyone. She left me on the night that she found out I was cheating. I didn’t end the affair right away and by the time I realized that I couldn’t live without her she’d already moved on. She didn’t want anything to do with me. She filed for divorce and refused to see or talk to me without lawyers. Within weeks of our breakup she was already dating another woman. I may never have found out about the baby had it not been for Helena Peabody’s malicious need to hurt me.”
“What did Helena have to do with it?”
“After I lost Tina I was at the lowest point in my life mother. I was self-destructive. I started drinking heavily and smoking excessively. I was isolated from our friends who all sided with Tina. Kit and my assistant James were the only two people who didn’t scorn me. I didn’t have anyone to blame but myself. It took some time, but finally I got my act together. I was just starting to crawl out of this pit of despair when Helena Peabody came along to spread her venom. Her mother was on an extended sabbatical and trusted Helena to run the Peabody Foundation in her stead.
Unbeknownst to Peggy and myself her daughter whom I’d never laid eyes on before had developed some kind of vendetta against me. I guess she was jealous of my close relationship with Peggy. So much so that she moved clear across the country to make my life a living hell. She manipulated her way in by awarding Tina’s non-profit with a hundred thousand dollar grant. It was the largest endowment in Peabody history so of course it got a lot of media attention for Tina and the center. It was so obviously nepotism to get into Tina’s good graces. Helena knew we were separated and she took advantage of Tina’s anger against me and her vulnerability after the breakup. Tina was craving attention and it wasn’t long before that snake charmed her way into her pants.”
“They were lovers?”
“Yes and what a coup that was for Helena. Unwittingly or not Tina played right into her malicious little scheme to destroy me. They dated for six months and in that time Helena ingratiated herself into our tight knit family circle. Once she had Tina in her clutches she set out to ruin my career. She used everything in her arsenal; sex, power, money, connections and the Peabody name to influence the board at the CAC to push me out.”

Bat you have a way with writing that triggers my heart. I love to read that Maxine is a forgiving person. I’m sure she will be able to convince Bette to look differently at Helena. And I have a feeling that Angelica has a important part to play. Thanks for this update. You’re a gifted writer.

I’ve not made comments for fear I would say something that would give away things that I shouldn’t but please know that I am reading every word. BAT I’m a little scared. Something is not sitting right with Peter? I’m glad Maxine has decided to come back to the U.S. Now with of this goin on do we see Greg changing his mind and starting a family of his own?
I finally catched up with this incredible story!
The reunion was everything i expected to be. Maxime sounds as a very remarkeble woman, loving, kind, forgiving and truly loves her children.
It will be hard for Greg to hear about why she left and under what circumstances he was concieved, but i can’t believe that the relationship between him and Bette will change, they were all victims due to that horrible man Melvin. Offcourse it will be a very big shock, but at least he grew up with all the love Maxime could give him, something Bette was denied.
Truly enjoyed the last chapters! Thank you!
Wanting to go to the states is going to be life altering for MAXINE because she left under extreme circumstances yet it would be best if she was closer to her children.Not knowing who or why someone wanted her dead is another problem.Telling KIT she had regrets shows compassion for the hurt she caused.Letting everyone know about the rape(s)will be hard especially for GREG ,being a child concieved from that will be tougher on him i imagined.thanks
