“So that’s when she brought in Allyn Barnes?”
“Yes. Allyn Barnes was part of the deal she struck with the board to buy the seat. She denied my grant proposal to create the need and to make me look bad. The board bought into it knowing full well that Peggy Peabody had always supported the arts. It was almost a given that our grant would be approved, but instead she diverted the funds and tripled what was requested for Tina’s project.”
“How did she get away with that?”
“She’s a Peabody. No explanation was necessary but her claim was that she was taking the Peabody Foundation in a different direction. That was just another manipulative tactic. If she was so interested in social services she would not have spent so much time at the CAC. She had absolutely no knowledge of art or interest in our agenda. She was there to colonize. Once she got the seat she then proceeded to bring someone in from the east coast behind my back. He was supposedly there to assist with ‘fund-raising’ but it was obvious to everyone especially me that he was to be my replacement. She had every intention of taking away my livelihood and anything else that meant anything to me, especially my wife and child.”
“How did you fight against all that and come out winning?”
“I didn’t … at least not at first. After several months of witnessing Helena’s manipulation Tina started to see her true colors but she was still enthralled. The only saving grace was that she decided Helena wasn’t good mother material for our child. Tina was still angry with me but she extended an olive branch that allowed me to be a part of Angie’s life. She wanted me to co-parent. I thank God every day that she didn’t chose Helena Peabody for that role. She would have damaged my baby just as she’s done to her own children with her sick sexual proclivities. She’d already corrupted Tina and that was bad enough.”
“So Tina asked you to be Angie’s other mother even though you were separated and she was with someone else? I don’t imagine that Helena took that too well.”
“It angered her even more, especially when Tina and I started spending more time together. Tina even told her that she wanted to date me again. That’s when she got me fired from the CAC. She started mistreating Tina and dating other women. Her plans backfired because her erratic behavior only served to push Tina towards me. Tina hadn’t fully forgiven me and she didn’t trust me but I suppose I was a better option than Helena. She asked to come home. She moved back into our house just a few days before Angie’s birth which was about a week after daddy passed away. It was a very emotional time and obviously not a good time to be making life-changing decisions but never the less we agreed to get back together. It was more for Angie’s sake than anything because we never reconciled as a couple. We didn’t even talk about what went wrong between us. Needless to say things got progressively worse after the baby was born.”

Bat you have a way with writing that triggers my heart. I love to read that Maxine is a forgiving person. I’m sure she will be able to convince Bette to look differently at Helena. And I have a feeling that Angelica has a important part to play. Thanks for this update. You’re a gifted writer.

I’ve not made comments for fear I would say something that would give away things that I shouldn’t but please know that I am reading every word. BAT I’m a little scared. Something is not sitting right with Peter? I’m glad Maxine has decided to come back to the U.S. Now with of this goin on do we see Greg changing his mind and starting a family of his own?
I finally catched up with this incredible story!
The reunion was everything i expected to be. Maxime sounds as a very remarkeble woman, loving, kind, forgiving and truly loves her children.
It will be hard for Greg to hear about why she left and under what circumstances he was concieved, but i can’t believe that the relationship between him and Bette will change, they were all victims due to that horrible man Melvin. Offcourse it will be a very big shock, but at least he grew up with all the love Maxime could give him, something Bette was denied.
Truly enjoyed the last chapters! Thank you!
Wanting to go to the states is going to be life altering for MAXINE because she left under extreme circumstances yet it would be best if she was closer to her children.Not knowing who or why someone wanted her dead is another problem.Telling KIT she had regrets shows compassion for the hurt she caused.Letting everyone know about the rape(s)will be hard especially for GREG ,being a child concieved from that will be tougher on him i imagined.thanks
