Fa La La La La La La La La
“Kit, just ignore Alice. Continue please.”
“Thank you Helena,” Kit nodded at Helena and narrowed her res at Alice. “In defense of Bette, though, she sang better than the other soloists. They only got their parts because the director wanted to spread things around. Bette thought it should be a meritocracy.”
“She had a point.”
“And she made it. Again and again and again, to no effect. But you know Bette. She would not give up, driving the director crazy. The same stuff that got her kicked out of every other choir after the disaster. Other churches, community, school. Kicked out for not being able to do things collectively.”
“What disaster?”
“Did you notice that Bette’s got a thing about Christmas carols versus Christmas songs?”
“We noticed.”
“Well, OK. See, our church choir, every year as far back as anyone could remember, had a concert called the “Celebration of Carols.” A week or so before the concert, anyone in the choir who wanted to do a solo performance at the concert would perform for the choir director, its assistant director and Pastor and Mrs. Reynolds. They’d pick the three winners.”
Kit stopped and took a sip of tea.
“Well, Bette began searching in February for the carol she wanted to perform the following Christmas. You know Bette—nothing ordinary for her. So she finally found one and, I gotta hand it to her, it is a beautiful carol. She practiced all the time, driving me crazy whenever I visited, asking me to listen and tell her if she was doing it right. I know she’s my sister and all, but I gotta tell you, she sang it beautifully.”
“What happened, Kit?”
“See, a few weeks before the concert, the director decided to try something new. He wanted to lighten things up, so he told everyone that the three songs would be secular songs.”
“I see. Not carols.”
“That’s right, Helena. Not carols. Bette called me and I told her that I would help her find a new song and practice it, but she’d hear nothing of it. She insisted that it was called a “Celebration of Carols,” so only carols were appropriate. Anyway, the day came and Bette auditioned. Everyone I asked who was there said that she sang beautifully, that it was wondrous. Even the choir director said that it was the best he had ever heard in the church. And, of course, she was disqualified.”

That was just as amazing and beautiful like your other stories. I have so missed your talented writing on this site. Can this be a possible return to the forum. I have so missed the “the wolve” story- “Backstory”. I was hoping that this was a version of that, but I am just as happy with the one I got.
