“Bette, we’ve been giving you a hard time, but I’m glad we had the chance to do this for Tina and I’m glad you asked.”

    “Here here.”

“Me, too, though you could have been nicer about the parking thing.”

Bette ignored Alice.  “Thank you guys for coming.  This caroling is so important to Tina and I just want to do whatever is possible to make it go well.”

“We know the songs and will scatter ourselves strategically in the group, with copies of the songbook to hand out.”

“Bette,” Shane asked, “I was wondering how people will be able to read the booklet in the dark.”

Bette’s eyes widened as her mouth dropped open.  “SHIT!”

All three women leaned away from the table and Bette and waited, immobile, their eyes darting everywhere, trying to do nothing that would catch Bette’s attention.

Suddenly Alice exhaled in relief.  “Bette, look.  James is here!”

    The next morning

    “JAMES!”

The young man trotted into Bette’s office.

“See if someone in the science department can figure out how to make the lyrics on the sheet glow in the dark.”

    “Which science department? “

    “I don’t know… Try chemistry.”

    90 minutes later:

“They can make it phosphorescent, but there will be a lot of chemicals that the carolers will be touching.”

    30 minutes later

“Talk to the theater department.  Ask them how we can get one of those screens that they use at the opera to translate the lyrics so you can tell what they’re singing.  But it’s got to be portable, so we can carry ot around with us.  We may need a few.”

    “What is it called?”

“How would I know?  Just describe it the way I just did.”

    90 minutes later

“They said they could get one for you in 3 months or so.”

“Three months!  That’s unacceptable!  Did you ask them how much it would cost if I wanted it in a week?”

    “No, I…”

    “Well, ask them that.”

“Um, Bette, I don’t think that that will matter.”

    “Money always matters, James.”

    5. That was just as amazing and beautiful like your other stories. I have so missed your talented writing on this site. Can this be a possible return to the forum. I have so missed the “the wolve” story- “Backstory”. I was hoping that this was a version of that, but I am just as happy with the one I got.
