Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
Bette pursed her lips, looking in the direction Nadia pointed her to as Tina assured her quietly, ”go on, honey. We can catch up later.”
Bette turned to look again at Tina and gave her a quick, hard kiss. ”I’ve missed you so much, baby. I’m sorry about this,” she whispered.
”Not as sorry as you will be when I tell you something,” Tina answered. Bette whirled around in surprise, ”what?” she mouthed. Tina just waved her off with a wink and mouthed back, ”Later! Go on, go on!”
”So how was your trip, Tina?” Nadia asked after a few minutes after they both watched Bette walk off. Tina found her glass and started to sip from it. ”It was long. And busy.”
”Well, it felt long on this end, too. Bette was, ummm… short-tempered…as the days and weeks passed after you’d left.”
”I hope she didn’t cause any misunderstandings, like the last time?” Tina asked and gave the young blonde an inquisitive look.
”I’m not sure about what happened the last time, since I hadn’t been around yet, but I can say that this organization functions a whole lot better when Bette is in a … um … better mood.”
Tina chewed on her lower lip.
”I hope I’m not being impertinent by saying so. And, if you’ll permit me sharing that she didn’t distinguish between who she flashed her impatience towards. It became readily apparent to anyone who spent any time with her that she was more and more irritable the longer you were away,” Nadia added. She tucked some of her long, straight hair behind her ears and crossed her arms, facing Tina.
Tina heaved a sigh and swallowed more of her drink. She assured Nadia that it had been alright to share her observations. “I guess I should have anticipated that,” Tina acknowledged. “But things in my work were such that the length of time I spent away couldn’t be helped.”
Nadia pursed her lips, and continued, “I was warned about Bette being difficult when you were away, but I didn’t expect it would be that difficult! She’s very attached to you…”
Tina gave her a rueful smile, “We can both be a little desperate when we’re apart, Nadia.”
Nadia heaved a slight sigh, and shrugged her shoulders resignedly. “I’m sure there’s a good reason that that’s the case. It’s cute, actually …”

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.
What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.
Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
