Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

Bette smiled at the woman. Aerin Loder was a newly-minted heiress who’d inherited her husband’s fortune, and was new to giving. After talking to her friends, she’d asked to see Bette through mutual friends, intending to ask the brunette’s advice about what she should do with her giving.

When Aerin arrived for her lunch-time appointment with Bette, she was ushered into Bette’s office just as Bette was in the middle of a tirade, cursing out a man, it sounded like, both talking in French. When Bette ended the call, still irritated, Aerin had quipped that she didn’t think this type of work could be so high-stress. Bette had snapped back, and was about to launch into a longer exposition about just how stressful the work was when the young blonde lawyer who’d ushered Aerin into the office interrupted, explaining to Aerin that they were in the middle of winnowing the various activities the foundation had been engaged in into a more manageable set of focus areas, thus Bette had been holding a series of conference calls that day with organizations that they were thinking of withdrawing their support from.

“Wow! No wonder your argument was so intense! I thought you all just sent money around. I didn’t think this could be such a blood sport!” Aerin had exclaimed.

“Oh, you have no idea!” Bette had responded with an ironic snort. “And that guy’s one of my oldest friends in this field, too. He’s the one who got me into charity work, actually.” She briefly explained that she and Martin Mourin, the Frenchman on the phone, had had many arguments over the years and would make up with one another soon enough. “Maybe in an hour or so, in fact, once we’ve both cooled down,” Bette said with a small smile.

Bette also offered her apologies to Aerin for her rudeness earlier. She’d walked around her desk to offer her hand, and Aerin had shaken her hand emphatically. Aerin had waved off the offered apologies. “So, if this is so difficult, why do you do it?” she’d asked Bette.

“Well, there’s nothing else I’d rather do, actually!” Bette had answered after giving the question some thought, laughing at the irony. They sat on Bette’s long, comfortable couch to share the lunch Aerin had offered to bring when she and Bette had agreed to meet, in exchange for taking Bette’s time that day. They fell into an easy conversation, finding out that they shared common interests and causes. Aerin had asked at the end of the hour-long lunch if she could learn more, and Bette ended up inviting Aerin to read materials in her office. After spending the rest of the day in Bette’s office as she studied various materials, while Bette resumed her strategy discussions over the phone with other foundations, Aerin left convinced that she couldn’t do better than channel her giving through Bette’s foundation. Trying to do this on her own seemed too daunting, given the glimpse of what she’d seen and read.

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
