Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
“Can you hear me?” the tech asked in a loud voice.
The blonde didn’t respond.
“Her vitals are weak. We need to get her to the ER stat!” the lead tech reported to the small team that rushed towards her with the gurney.
Jules had heard the commotion when the lead tech had shouted for help, and, with the help of one of the staff of the estate who had knelt next to her after Jackson had left, had stood up gingerly. She knew the shout had come from roughly the spot where Diane had fallen, cut down by a bullet as she ran in front of Tina. Diane had instinctively leapt forward, to throw herself between whatever was shooting at them and their pregnant friend. Jules stumbled towards the scene around the fallen Diane.
“She’s with me,” Jules moaned to the techs as loudly as she could, as she leaned on the arm of the staff of the estate who had helped her stand up. “Her name’s Diane Wyett. She’s my partner.” She began to sob.
“We’re taking her to the ER,” the lead tech informed her brusquely, as the techs finished strapping Diane, and then prepared to push the gurney towards the ambulance.
“I’m going,” Jules insisted, stumbling forward, holding her head lightly as tears poured out in torrents now. She let a loud sob out, ”Diane!”
“You can follow them to the hospital,” the lead tech replied in a louder, commanding voice, holding Jules lightly by the shoulders and pushing her back to give space to the techs as they hustled the gurney past Jules and the lead tech toward the ambulance.
From somewhere in the deep recesses of her rapidly defogging mind, Jules gathered her wits, swallowed her tears and shouted back at those keeping her from joining her partner, “I’m going! I need to be near her! She needs to know I’m with her!” The lead tech tightened her grip on Jules shoulders as the auburn-haired woman resisted.
George had seen Jules stand up minutes earlier and guessed that the auburn-haired woman was probably trying to make her way to Diane. He’d been directing traffic amongst the ambulance drivers so that they could re-park the ambulances in such a way that the ambulances could each make a rapid exit from the estate after each was loaded with the victims.
He ran towards Jules and heard his friend and the lead tech shouting at each other, and guessed at the subtext of the argument they were having. He realized they needed to break the impasse quickly. George bellowed as he ran, “Let her! Let her go with Diane! She can help!”

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.
What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.
Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.
Fantastic to have another post on this story!
Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!
Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
