Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

Meanwhile, two techs hurriedly rolled out a gurney from one ambulance when the tech who looked like she was leading the effort called out, “I need help over here!  Help!  Now!!!”

After the tech who’d been examining Jules could discern that the auburn-haired woman had surprisingly not been injured, even if she’d been smeared with blood all over her body, he sprang up to rush back to join the other techs frantically attending to the others.

Jackson rushed to the spot at Jules’ side that the tech had just vacated, while he hurriedly tapped on the call icon next to Miller’s text.  “What happened?! Who shot at them?” Jackson barked into the phone as he kneeled next to Jules, who was still moaning.  He gingerly brushed back normally lustrous auburn hair now matted down with blood.  He tried to visually check Jules for himself to see if she had suffered obvious head injuries.

“Lone sniper hidden in the tall grass about half a mile from the estate,” Miller answered calmly.  “I haven’t spotted any others but I’m continuing to sweep the area.”

“I’ll keep the phone on. Tell me anything you find!” Jackson shouted back.  “Don’t hang up!”

He didn’t know why he was shouting, exactly, but realized instinctively that his life had just been turned upside down.  The unnerving, brazen, almost surgical nature of the attack triggered a heretofore overwhelming sense of panic he had never experienced in his carefully controlled life.   He didn’t know what it was that threw him off more: whether it was because the sniper attack on the estate had been carried out swiftly and mostly in silence.  Or that they hadn’t prepared adequately for this particular unknown. What did this mean? Could they be attacked again?  He realized that if it hadn’t been for the accidental good fortune of Miller choosing to drive over to meet with him, at Jackson’s insistence, instead of driving to Winchester to scout the partner of the man who’d attacked Bette in the tunnel, no one would have been able to stop the shooter and everyone could have been picked off by the sniper.

He peered into the auburn –haired woman’s eyes that were focusing on his.  Jules moaned haltingly, “I’m okay.  I’m okay.  Go check on the others.”

The few staff working in the estate on a Sunday who had rushed with Jackson to the scene had scampered back into the estate and had ran back out with an assortment of pillows and blankets.  He waved his arms frantically to get their attention.  One ran over to him, offering him pillows and blankets.  He grabbed one pillow, and gently laid Jules head on it.

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
