Chapter XXIII – Empire State of Mind – Will to Power

He looked up from his phone and gave her an understanding smile. “No, Tina.  Actually, this is about what happens when you fall in love, right?  Probably for the first time.  For the only time?  She’s been doing the same for you, by pretending to have that affair with the redhead.”

She crinkled her eyebrows slightly, and considered him, said nothing in response.

She took a sip of her tea as he resumed thumbing through his contacts.

He added under his breath, “She had the same determined look in her eye, too, when she peppered me with questions about how best to protect you from the collective, and the leadership, especially.”

Finally, he found a name he’d been searching for, and then sighed as he looked up at her. “My mom and dad had that look in common, towards the end, after his heart attack.  I’m glad I saw that between them.  It’s a real gift for children to see their parents so obviously in love with each other, you know?  Makes the world feel right.”

He motioned for her to give him her phone. She raised her eyebrows in question.  “I want you to listen in on a conversation I’m about to have.  It’s important that you hear what he has to say.  So let me give you access to my phone.  Ok?”

He put a device on top of her phone while he kept his phone next to hers.

Then he tapped the “call phone” icon across the name of the person he’d been searching for. He whispered to Tina, “You’ll get to listen in on the call.  I won’t be able to listen to any of yours after, don’t worry.”

She put the phone on her ear and heard a ringing tone. I’ll have to get Veronica to look my phone over when I’m done here, she thought to herself.

“Hullo?” a man’s voice came on.

“Fleming. It’s Hegel, Peter Hegel.  Calling you from a different number.  You know the drill.”

“Damn, Peter. I asked for a couple of days.  Or three, if possible.”

“You got 68 hours. Close enough.”

The man’s voice sounded tired, and irritated. “Well, as I suspected, Lord Philby’s our man.”

    “What did you find?”

“Unauthorized activity in the New York area from a couple weeks ago, like you and I discussed yesterday. But there’s something we found out earlier today, too: activity in Charlotte, North Carolina a few days ago.  Both ops carried out by a black ops team of a sort, comprised of people who’d done some work for him years ago, in 1987-88, I think.”

    2. WOW! is all I can say about this incredible story of intrigue and romance and mystery. Its the book I can’t put down with all that goes on page after page. I’m so loving it with all the characters and the twists and turns in the storyline. Bravo for creating such an incredible story!

    3. OK. first things first. Tina make someone investigate Peter’s medical claim. Make sure the villains have not discovered the fact that Bette’s “redhead” friend has been in two public places at the same time on different ends of New York city. And when it is time to “grab the canned peaches and head for the bomb shelter” team Tibette ensure everybody knows where the two safe havens are located. Things are getting a bit “dicey” Great writing, I love it

    4. Canned peaches — so funny, love it!
