Chapter XXIII – Empire State of Mind – Will to Power
“Scared of what?” Peter asked.
“Of him. Made people put up with a lot. Was very particular, proud, they’d said, a real bully. Accumulated stuff on people, and used those to get them to do stuff off the books for him.”
“But it was almost impossible to do the same to him, especially when he was at the height of his powers in the intelligence field.”
“He had no vices. He hardly drank. And kept himself to himself. Like now.”
“Well, it seems he was no different from the vast majority of people these days, even outside your line of work,” Peter observed. “He was out for himself.”
“I guess so,” Fleming agreed. “Hardly “lordship” material, really. Who knows? He may have finagled that position using info on someone, or a bunch of people.”
“Still, this is a real head-scratcher.”
Peter prompted him, after prolonged silence from Fleming, “What? You come across something else?”
“Well … all this recent activity in America is really puzzling. Why did this careful, controlled man take such risks? Mobilizing that black ops team, self-funding those activities? Just seems totally out of character, different from who he’d been throughout his career.”
“Doesn’t surprise me,” Peter snorted. “I don’t know the man, but I recognize the symptoms, Fleming.”
“What are you thinking?”
“Money. He was after money. Probably thinks he’s coming into lots of it.”
Fleming didn’t respond. After further silence from the other end, Peter asked, “So, another 100 grand after things die down, like we agreed? After you can confirm that man and his lot are out of the picture? And won’t pose any threat to my friends?”
Fleming coughed. “Yeah. About that. Look, Peter, the widows and orphans fund of the Met were very appreciative of the first 100 grand you sent. But…”
“Yes, Fleming?”
“Peter, we go back a long way. So I’ll give it to you straight. This guy’s a mean jackass. And in my gut I think he’s not going down without a fight. Worse, I won’t promise you that we’ll be able to control everything because there’s a lot of politics we have to balance things against on our end.”
“Hmmm… something you’re not telling me?”
“Yeah. We haven’t been able to figure out a line from one of the last emails we pulled from one of the email accounts we figured was his, based on the info from the counter-intel guys. And until we do, I promise you we’re not letting up. Even if he goes to the slammer without telling us.”

Best,

Thanks! I had a feeling Peter was going to leave Bette in his will! I think the shit is about to hit the fan. PPS
Seems to be coming to a head. Glad Tina is getting more involved. Enjoyed it, thanks
would like to see tom love with bette and bette this sexier than ever.
Wow good chapter now my head is spinning…….Hopefully we see things fall into place? As always keep the Tibette safe.
WOW! is all I can say about this incredible story of intrigue and romance and mystery. Its the book I can’t put down with all that goes on page after page. I’m so loving it with all the characters and the twists and turns in the storyline. Bravo for creating such an incredible story!
OK. first things first. Tina make someone investigate Peter’s medical claim. Make sure the villains have not discovered the fact that Bette’s “redhead” friend has been in two public places at the same time on different ends of New York city. And when it is time to “grab the canned peaches and head for the bomb shelter” team Tibette ensure everybody knows where the two safe havens are located. Things are getting a bit “dicey” Great writing, I love it
Canned peaches — so funny, love it!
Thanks for the comments over the past few chapters, ladies. Approaching the end; hope you’ll continue to let me know what you think, e.g., if it continues to flow for you.
