Chapter XXIII – Empire State of Mind – Will to Power

“What did it say?” Peter asked.

“Something about taking out one custodian and going for the other one.”

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Peter was thoughtful after he ended the call with Fleming. The last five minutes of the call had been about the possibility that Lord Philby may have contracted with someone outside of the black ops team to do something about the remaining custodian. Bette had talked about her theory regarding pairs of people down through the years, possibly over the last two hundred years, being entrusted with safeguarding the gold hoard. She said she’d recently come across a treasure trove of information about all of that, but which had belonged to someone who had suddenly passed away, and could have been half of the “safe hands” of the current generation of people watching over the gold hoard.  She needed help to find the other half of the pair guarding the gold now to complete the information that she said had been missing in what she came across.  Could this be linked to whatever Lord Philby was tracking also?

He thought about the strange call he’d gotten just before leaving his TribeCa flat for his customary late afternoon walk. It had been from a friend of his father’s.  She’d asked him to visit her in her farm in Upperville, Virginia, which abutted an estate of the Roosevelt family.

He thought about his own situation. Damn, everything’s on a compressed schedule now!  Fleming’s right.  Whatever we need to take care of, we have to do so now.  And I have to continue to keep Bette safe, no matter what.

Peter asked Tina, “Have you and Bette discussed any of this stuff?”

Tina shook her head. “No.  She’s been really careful about what she tells me or anyone else.  She’s talked to a couple of people, like her lawyer, Tyler, and only then in generalities, whenever she needed to refine something she was working out in her mind.  And a friend of ours, Sylvia, who’d helped her with various things.  But Sylvia died a little over a week ago.”

Peter licked his lips. “And me.”

Tina studied him, and drank her tea. A million questions were swirling around her mind.  But she didn’t have the luxury of thinking through what she’d just heard, because Peter seemed intent about something.

    2. WOW! is all I can say about this incredible story of intrigue and romance and mystery. Its the book I can’t put down with all that goes on page after page. I’m so loving it with all the characters and the twists and turns in the storyline. Bravo for creating such an incredible story!

    3. OK. first things first. Tina make someone investigate Peter’s medical claim. Make sure the villains have not discovered the fact that Bette’s “redhead” friend has been in two public places at the same time on different ends of New York city. And when it is time to “grab the canned peaches and head for the bomb shelter” team Tibette ensure everybody knows where the two safe havens are located. Things are getting a bit “dicey” Great writing, I love it

    4. Canned peaches — so funny, love it!
