Tina looked at Bette who was helping the boys examine their gifts – a Lego fire station for Zak, roller skates for Josh and a radio controller car for Dan.

“I have known her since she was 18 years old and last night moved me – I have never seen her looking so much in love. Helena has told me repeatedly about how the two of you are together but I needed to see it for myself. Bette’s happiness means as much to me as Helena’s does “
Before Tina could speak Peggy was surrounded by children all wanting to hug her and thank her for their gifts -each child sure that their gift was the best. Bette went across to get Peggy some food and a glass of wine – Tina followed her lover
“Is she always that generous?”
“She’s got a writer who she wanted and she is a very rich woman – as I said – she likes to be liked and she does tend to forget to stop when she gets going “
“I have always wanted a bread maker – you know how much I envy yours “
“I was thinking of getting you one for Christmas but I will have to strike it off the list “
“How does she know what to get the girls?”
“She talks to Helena a lot –they don’t see each other much but they are close. No doubt Peggy knows all about us and all about the different adventures of the kids – here’s your mom and dad “
Tina went across and hugged her father
“Hey there Tina – what is going on?”
“I agreed a new book deal and this is my new publisher – she’s Helena’s mom “
“Gifts for the girls?” Sarah said raising her eyebrows at her three granddaughters all hugging the stranger
“Gifts for everyone- I want you to meet Peggy – she’s marvellous “
“Tell us about the deal “James said aware of how Sarah Kennard was looking at Peggy.

I’m thinking even Becky might catch on, and if she catches on, I bet she and Dan will have a chat. Being a boy he might not believe, but it’ll creep up on him, sort of like NC-17s creep up on you. Now Ally, why don’t you send Peggy over to my house? I can be charming and could stand some gifts (although that new cell phone I was telling you about has a camera, so I hope she’d give me something else.)
