I glanced back over my shoulder, “It’s a long story but the short version is that I wound up at a classmate’s house.”
”Do I know her?”
I bit my lip, “It’s Ashley Davies.”
”The girl who always picks on you?”
”Yeah, I’ll explain later.”
She was silent for a moment, “Was she mean to you?”
”No, she was actually nice.”
”Then why are you coming home? Maybe this is your chance to make amends. I know you aren’t a fighter, Spence.”
I kicked at the ground, “I don’t know. I don’t think she wants to make amends.”
”Well, the worse that could happen is that she makes you leave. And then I’ll come pick you up, no matter what time it is.”
”Yeah, ok. I guess I’ll try, thanks dad.”
”No problem. I’ll tell your mother that you are spending the night at a friend’s and that your phone died, just in case it all goes well. That way she won’t be calling you every hour.”
I smiled, “Alright, then I’ll turn my phone off. I love you.”
”Love you too. Bye.”
”Bye.”
I hung up, turned my phone off, and turned back towards the house. My dad could talk me into anything. I shrugged and walked back up to the door. It was then that I remembered that I had locked it. I gritted my teeth and then rang the doorbell. I waited, rocking back and forth on the balls of my feet till she opened the door.
She quirked her eyebrow, silently asking me why I was ringing her doorbell. I looked at her feet then forced myself to look back up at her face, “Do you uh… have some pajamas I could borrow?”
And for the first time she smiled. She nodded and stood back for me to enter.
I walked past her and waited for her to lead the way back up to her room. I followed her around the corner to see a large walk-in closet. She walked in and shuffled around in some drawers before holding up loose pants like hers in one hand and boxers in the other hand. I bit my lip and contemplated my choices before picking the boxer shorts. She threw them at me and put the pants away. She pulled out a tank top and tossed it to me.
