Where You Go There You Are

“So you don’t really want Tina’s number.” Alice fires back almost not letting Bette finish.

“No I want it.” Bette assures Alice the request was legitimate.

“Listen here Bubba, you don’t get that kind of information out of me without a little explanation.” Alice explains getting a little cocky.

“Bubba?” Bette asks looking at Alice suspiciously.

“Oh all right.  I’ve always like saying that.” Alice throws her hands up in the air to let Bette know she’s at the end of her rope.  “So I’m here now TALK.  I can’t think of one reason why in the world you would want to go after Tina all this time.  Well I did think of one reason but you obviously looking as good as you do makes that reason wrong.  So that leaves me back to why on earth would you want Tina’s number?  HUH?”

Bette just lets Alice go on in her usual logic.  A smile plastered on her face is her only answer.  Alice unending ranting is unknowingly reinforcing Bette’s earlier decision to trust her.  She obviously doesn’t know about Angelica.  “Alice calm down will you?  Let me get a word in and I’ll give you explanation.  But I’m not going to try and out shout you.”

Alice steps back away from Bette and places her hands on her hips, Bette expects her toe to start going up and down any minute counting down the limit to Alice’s patience.  To go along with her other body language Alice levels her glare on Bette enough to let Bette know she has Alice’s undivided attention even if it’s just for a moment so she better hurry up and explain.

“Ok Alice, I asked you for Tina’s number because today her daughter walked into the shelter and Shane brought her to me over at the gallery.” Bette says quickly.

“What her daughter?  Tina has a daughter?  Is she a runaway?  Why did Shane bring her to you?  No don’t answer that.” Alice says holding both her hands up.  “God Tina has a daughter.” This Alice muses to herself.  “Wow.  Wow  WOW.”  Alice says each wow progressively louder illustrating the words registering in Alice’s mind.

“Tina has a daughter.”  Alice now is shouting, her facial expressions show an amazement that mirrors her words.  “That always was her dream.” Alice comments.  Her mind continues down this path.  “But why would her daughter be here?  Bette what are we going to do.  Is she in trouble or something?  Drugs?”

Bette just marveled at Alice’s mind and how it processed.  She was going through her thought process out loud.  Until she got to the drugs Bette stood in a trance listening but now she needed to interrupt.  “No Alice I don’t think drugs are involved here.  But something is afoot and from your surprise I take it you didn’t know about Angelica’s existence either.”

“Angelica is that her name?” Alice asks ignoring the rest of Bette’s statement.  “So why is she here?  How did she get here?  She can’t be that old, I mean Tina hasn’t been gone that long.”

“Longer than you think, I haven’t asked but she’s got to be 15-16.  She going to be over at Shane’s later for pizza.  Stick around and see for yourself but I’m warning you, she doesn’t know about her mother’s past here.  I’m afraid of giving her too much information before I talk to Tina.  So be on your best behavior.” Bette admonishes Alice sternly to make her point.

“I mean it.  If you let any info out that you know who she is or anything about her mother, Alice there is no place you can run to where I won’t find you and hurt you.”  Bette points her index finger at Alice in warning.

Here Bette pauses waiting for Alice to verbally respond before moving on.  This is a point she isn’t going to let go of until Alice is absolutely clear.  Alice looks Bette in the face and nods.  She knows better than to challenge Bette when she’s like this.

“Sure I’ve got it.  No talking about the past.”

Even after this acknowledgement Bette continues to stare at Alice for a few long moments.  Her point made, “OK, I’m not even sure why she’s here but whatever the reason I am sure that Tina is probably out of her mind with worry.”

Alice throws Bette a raised eyebrow at her rebuke.  “I always thought that Tina would be such a good mother.”

“Thus the reason I’m looking for Tina’s number do you have it?”

    1. Glad that Bette is so calm about this and is not over reacting. Hopefully Alice will not do something that will spook Angelica and make her run away again. Alice is usuallt a time bomb waiting for a place to go off and this would be the wrong time for that to happen. Hopefully Alice will give Bette the number so Tina’s mind will be at rest. Great chapter. PPS

    2. It’s quite the sticky situation all around. Everybody is going to be careful how they handle Angelica and at the same time seem forced or she’ll think something’s up. Bette and Tina will have to be diplomatic with each other, too, once they get in contact.

    3. A mature Bette who would have thought it – only you and certainly not IC. Thank you for returning with this story and for giving us a Bette to admire without cringing.

    4. In 17 yrs Bette has become so calm and much more mature. Tina will love this new Bette. She is easy going and I love how she handle Alice. This is not Bettes fault,I wonder if Angie will be angry with Tina for keeping her away from Bette all these yrs. Angie has missed so much for not knowing Bette. thanks

    5. Well look who the cat dragged in! So good to see a post in your name mate! Ain’t it funny how easy it is to get back into a story and remember everything from a year ago! Looking forward to the meeting of B&T, please don’t say its going to be at least another 65 chapters till that happens! x

    6. Hey JWet, Just love the mature and protective side of Bette’s persona. Everything she has been through with her illness has made her appreciate life and all its multiple facets. Bette realizes Tina’s angst and distress at her daughter’s disappearance and is know doing all htat she can to save Tina more hurt. There is stil such a connection between Bette and Tina that they protect each other even after all this time has pasted. Theirs truly is a love forged in heaven. Shane was great with Angelica, gently teaing out the truth without pushing too far. Then Alice. Oh what levity and brightness she beings to this tale. Her concern for Bette’s health was so sweet and honest. The tale has completely hooked and bedazzled me. Thank you so much dear friend. Life is a wonderful journey. Your Loyal Fan and Friend. Take care.

    7. So glad Bette is trying to think clearly and think about what Tina is going through not knowing where Angie is. Their will be time later for the rest. Alice cracks me up, thinking Bette was dying.
