Where You Go There You Are

Bette holds Alice close while she continues her mumbling which is only interrupted by an occasional sob.  In an effort to calm her Bette sways gently, rocking Alice back and forth in a comforting motion.  Sure enough after a period of mumbled emotions, Alice comes up for air and looks Bette in the face.

“Bette please tell me you’re not going to die.  That you will keep fighting.  That you will fight to the very end.”

Bette is still surprised but doesn’t hesitate to answer Alice.  “Alice I’m not going to die.  At least not in the foreseeable future.  And I will fight but I’m not sure what I’m fighting.  Do you care to fill me in?”

The calmness of Bette’s response isn’t what Alice expected so now it’s her that looks puzzled while she pulls her head back to evaluate Bette.  The Bette standing before her doesn’t look like she’s falling apart or even in any difficulty.  “You’re not dying?” Now Alice says it as an accusation.

Bette realizing that whatever crisis Alice was in is now passed couldn’t resist teasing her.  “Well yes I’m dying aren’t we all?”

“Oh don’t give me that.  I mean you aren’t having a relapse that is going to kill you any moment.” Alice now shouts at Bette.

Seeing that Alice is upset and not wishing to lead her on any more Bette calming reaches out and places her hands on Alice’s shoulders so she can look Alice straight on.  “No Alice I’m not.  But you being so upset by the thought is really touching to me.   Thank you Alice.”

It takes Alice a moment to take in Bette’s words.  Alice is taken by Bette’s straight forward, sincere response.  An immediate smile comes across her face at the news that her friend is not in trouble.  The smile is short lived as her quick mind now realizes that something else is afoot.  Reaching up and knocking Bette’s hands off her shoulders, “Than why in the hell do you want to know Tina’s number.”

“Ahh” Bette mutters, she gets it now, where all of this craziness was coming from.  Alice in her usual Alice way jumped to the conclusion that Bette must really be dying this time if she wanted Tina’s phone number.  Laughing at the way her friend’s mind worked, Bette can only shake her head.  “Alice you have got to quit jumping to conclusions.  I baited you with my message because I thought it would get you to call me back sooner rather than later.  I never intended to cause you such worry.”

    1. Glad that Bette is so calm about this and is not over reacting. Hopefully Alice will not do something that will spook Angelica and make her run away again. Alice is usuallt a time bomb waiting for a place to go off and this would be the wrong time for that to happen. Hopefully Alice will give Bette the number so Tina’s mind will be at rest. Great chapter. PPS

    2. It’s quite the sticky situation all around. Everybody is going to be careful how they handle Angelica and at the same time seem forced or she’ll think something’s up. Bette and Tina will have to be diplomatic with each other, too, once they get in contact.

    3. A mature Bette who would have thought it – only you and certainly not IC. Thank you for returning with this story and for giving us a Bette to admire without cringing.

    4. In 17 yrs Bette has become so calm and much more mature. Tina will love this new Bette. She is easy going and I love how she handle Alice. This is not Bettes fault,I wonder if Angie will be angry with Tina for keeping her away from Bette all these yrs. Angie has missed so much for not knowing Bette. thanks

    5. Well look who the cat dragged in! So good to see a post in your name mate! Ain’t it funny how easy it is to get back into a story and remember everything from a year ago! Looking forward to the meeting of B&T, please don’t say its going to be at least another 65 chapters till that happens! x

    6. Hey JWet, Just love the mature and protective side of Bette’s persona. Everything she has been through with her illness has made her appreciate life and all its multiple facets. Bette realizes Tina’s angst and distress at her daughter’s disappearance and is know doing all htat she can to save Tina more hurt. There is stil such a connection between Bette and Tina that they protect each other even after all this time has pasted. Theirs truly is a love forged in heaven. Shane was great with Angelica, gently teaing out the truth without pushing too far. Then Alice. Oh what levity and brightness she beings to this tale. Her concern for Bette’s health was so sweet and honest. The tale has completely hooked and bedazzled me. Thank you so much dear friend. Life is a wonderful journey. Your Loyal Fan and Friend. Take care.

    7. So glad Bette is trying to think clearly and think about what Tina is going through not knowing where Angie is. Their will be time later for the rest. Alice cracks me up, thinking Bette was dying.
