“Hey Alice wow its not often I get your voicemail but … well give me a call it’s Bette.   I need a phone number from you and just to peak your interest so you’ll call back quickly I will even tell you whose number I’m looking for … Tina Kennard.”

With her message delivered Bette hangs up quickly.  “That aught to make sure she calls back real fast.”

    Chapter 23

“Hey kid, how’s it going?” Shane asks moving her way up to the top of the bleachers to take a seat next to Angelica.

Angelica smiled acknowledging Shane as she sat. “Hey” then turns back to locate Frankie.  She was second in line to go off again.  Angelica is happy for the interruption, her preoccupation with her thoughts of her Mother seemed intense.  She was glad they didn’t prevent her from missing Frankie’s next ride.

Shane can see that Angelica is looking to locate Frankie.  Trying to strike up a conversation with Angelica, “How’d it go after I left the gallery?”

Turning away from the tubes to take a quick glance at Shane, “Good I think.  I’m going there tomorrow.” Angelica turns back to keep her eyes on Frankie but adds, “She’s a cool lady.”

“That she is.” Shane says with a sense of conviction in her voice.  She then goes on, “She saved me when I first got to this town.”

This claim struck a nerve with Angelica.  It was enough to pull her attention away from Frankie and the view.  Turning all the way around, away from the skateboards Angelica looks Shane straight on.  “You needed saving?”

Shane’s first reaction was to laugh just from the surprise in Angelica’s voice.  Her laughed filled the space between them.  Still chuckling, “Oh yeah I needed saving.  I made a life on the streets for longer than I care to admit.  Bette and  uh … uh her partner at the time, took me in under their wing enough that I got me feet under me.  You know they gave me enough help that I straighten out my act and put a little something together for my self.”

Angelica nods her head believe that the Bette she met today would do that for people.  She seemed like that type.  “Is that why you have the shelter because someone helped you?”

    1. Glad that Bette is so calm about this and is not over reacting. Hopefully Alice will not do something that will spook Angelica and make her run away again. Alice is usuallt a time bomb waiting for a place to go off and this would be the wrong time for that to happen. Hopefully Alice will give Bette the number so Tina’s mind will be at rest. Great chapter. PPS

    2. It’s quite the sticky situation all around. Everybody is going to be careful how they handle Angelica and at the same time seem forced or she’ll think something’s up. Bette and Tina will have to be diplomatic with each other, too, once they get in contact.

    3. A mature Bette who would have thought it – only you and certainly not IC. Thank you for returning with this story and for giving us a Bette to admire without cringing.

    4. In 17 yrs Bette has become so calm and much more mature. Tina will love this new Bette. She is easy going and I love how she handle Alice. This is not Bettes fault,I wonder if Angie will be angry with Tina for keeping her away from Bette all these yrs. Angie has missed so much for not knowing Bette. thanks

    5. Well look who the cat dragged in! So good to see a post in your name mate! Ain’t it funny how easy it is to get back into a story and remember everything from a year ago! Looking forward to the meeting of B&T, please don’t say its going to be at least another 65 chapters till that happens! x

    6. Hey JWet, Just love the mature and protective side of Bette’s persona. Everything she has been through with her illness has made her appreciate life and all its multiple facets. Bette realizes Tina’s angst and distress at her daughter’s disappearance and is know doing all htat she can to save Tina more hurt. There is stil such a connection between Bette and Tina that they protect each other even after all this time has pasted. Theirs truly is a love forged in heaven. Shane was great with Angelica, gently teaing out the truth without pushing too far. Then Alice. Oh what levity and brightness she beings to this tale. Her concern for Bette’s health was so sweet and honest. The tale has completely hooked and bedazzled me. Thank you so much dear friend. Life is a wonderful journey. Your Loyal Fan and Friend. Take care.

    7. So glad Bette is trying to think clearly and think about what Tina is going through not knowing where Angie is. Their will be time later for the rest. Alice cracks me up, thinking Bette was dying.
