What I Want for Christmas – Part II

Bette got so passionate when talking about art that Tina hadn’t had the heart to tell her that she was tired of the topic.  Tina was just as surprised as Bette that she lost it.  When Tina entered the cool building that housed the art collection and started looking around, she was surprised to discover that really liked some of the work on display.  On the second floor, she found Bette and observed her from a distance as she charmed the curator.  Tina waited for a break and politely introduced herself and tagged along until the end of his tour. Afterwards, they were treated to a tour of the vineyard, by a very knowledgeable vintner, which both Bette and Tina enjoyed very much. (Tina due to her interest in gardening and Bette due to her interest in drinking and collecting wine.)

The wine they drank helped dispel the hard feelings and Tina and Bette were able to hash everything out well enough to enjoy the rest of their trip.  When they got to Mendocino, Tina could see that Bette chose the small, unpretentious town with her in mind and Tina made a point of dragging Bette into every art gallery she could find.  Bette took Tina to a nice arboretum where Tina impressed Bette with her horticultural knowledge.

They both enjoyed walking along the headlands, finding the natural beauty of place and the attraction they felt between them an overwhelming combination.  The delicious dinner they ate was served at such a leisurely pace that it stretched the limits of Bette’s patience, but she couldn’t say which she enjoyed more the chocolate soufflé or the view of Tina framed by the sunset over the ocean.  At night in their second floor room that overlooked the ocean, as the moon poured through the window, they showed each other how much they cared in ways that words could never express.

“I thought you were going to kill me that day.  I can’t believe you went back on your own volition.”  Bette said in disbelief.

“Well, I have nobody to share the driving with and I didn’t want to get drunk so I needed a break.  Believe it or not I actually liked the collection when I saw it the first time.  The pieces you sold them look nice.”

    1. I always find it interesting as to what writers read into the JoBette relationship to justify Bette putting up with her shit..not to mention the lack of chemistry onscreen. I’m glad you put some depth into the Tina character. She has future plans. She has fun on the side when she is out of town without Angelica. I’m glad she didn’t third wheel it with Bette and Jodi.. she is better than that BS. Plus, I like that you addressed the Alice issue. While I hated Tina going back to men I always thought Alice was super immature about it.

    2. madcapper, that was really good…poor bette, its such a frustrating place to be, with those worries about the future. i think you’ve drawn it all out really well. i felt it right at the end, that ‘damn’ feeling and i swear, i sighed along with her! great work, really good.

    3. I look forward to more initimate conversations like the one Bette and Tina just shared. To me that is what a true relationship is built on. Time spent talking about whatever comes up. Tina was right in going off on her own for Christmas, even though she is feels all alone now. It seems that both Bette and Tina feel all alone together.

    4. I have been waiting and hoping that you would continue this story. All of your stories are so well written. Thanks for this–can’t wait for the next chapter! Lin

    5. Bette, they were the worst of times, but they were the best. You gotta take the good with the bad, and with Tina you bad was always made better. Love the conversation between the two, a few more like that should do it. Bette, Tina has not moved on without you, she’s just waiting for you to open up your awesomely beautiful eyes, and see that she’s been right there all along. Jodi, sorry, you and Bette have never and will never have that special connection that make B&T who they are and what we love.
