What I Want for Christmas – Part II

    “Did you taste anything good?”

“I’m drinking a nice pinot noire that I found.”

“Did you get any for me?”

    “Maybe.” Tina laughed.

She had actually put together a case of different reserve wines that could only be purchased at the vineyards as her Christmas present to Bette.

“You’ll never guess where I went yesterday.”  Tina teased.

    “Where?”

    “I saw the Hess collection”

    “No way!”  Bette laughed.

On their first trip to San Francisco Bette had taken Tina to a few of the museums – these visits included private tours by staff members she knew, galleries, and to the homes or studios of several artists she knew or that she was interested in for the gallery.  Tina never expected Bette to be the type to go to Fisherman’s Wharf or Alcatraz, but she didn’t think their vacation would be all art all the time.  When they finally drove over the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped along the beautiful headlands, Tina felt herself relaxing, she figured she’d be able to take Bette on a few hikes in addition to the wine tasting.  Tina loved being outdoors and hoped that being in the countryside would get Bette to loosen up a little.  While Tina liked art well enough, she never thought she was going to understand some of the contemporary art Bette was teaching her about and she felt like she had been to an art lecture that had gone on for days.

After going to a few wineries, Bette made a bit of a detour and took them to Hess Vineyards.  When Tina saw that there was an art collection there to see and that Bette had made plans to introduce herself to the curator she flipped her lid.  Tina told Bette off for not caring about what she wanted to see and do and that she would not enter another gallery with Bette on the trip, but Bette was free to view the collection for as long as she wanted.  Bette was taken aback. It hadn’t occurred to her that Tina wasn’t enjoying herself and she didn’t understand why Tina hadn’t said something to her sooner.

Bette ended up storming off to see the curator, she was representing an artist she was sure would be perfect for Mr. Hess’ collection and she didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to cultivate an important client.  After a walk in the sun calmed Tina down and “tasting” several glasses of wine lubricated Tina’s thought process, Tina went in search of Bette.  While she still thought Bette wasn’t being considerate enough – she also realized that Bette had a point.  Bette wasn’t a mind reader and she should have told Bette about what she wanted to do instead of letting Bette make all the decisions.

    1. I always find it interesting as to what writers read into the JoBette relationship to justify Bette putting up with her shit..not to mention the lack of chemistry onscreen. I’m glad you put some depth into the Tina character. She has future plans. She has fun on the side when she is out of town without Angelica. I’m glad she didn’t third wheel it with Bette and Jodi.. she is better than that BS. Plus, I like that you addressed the Alice issue. While I hated Tina going back to men I always thought Alice was super immature about it.

    2. madcapper, that was really good…poor bette, its such a frustrating place to be, with those worries about the future. i think you’ve drawn it all out really well. i felt it right at the end, that ‘damn’ feeling and i swear, i sighed along with her! great work, really good.

    3. I look forward to more initimate conversations like the one Bette and Tina just shared. To me that is what a true relationship is built on. Time spent talking about whatever comes up. Tina was right in going off on her own for Christmas, even though she is feels all alone now. It seems that both Bette and Tina feel all alone together.

    4. I have been waiting and hoping that you would continue this story. All of your stories are so well written. Thanks for this–can’t wait for the next chapter! Lin

    5. Bette, they were the worst of times, but they were the best. You gotta take the good with the bad, and with Tina you bad was always made better. Love the conversation between the two, a few more like that should do it. Bette, Tina has not moved on without you, she’s just waiting for you to open up your awesomely beautiful eyes, and see that she’s been right there all along. Jodi, sorry, you and Bette have never and will never have that special connection that make B&T who they are and what we love.
