What I Want for Christmas – Part II

    Previously

“Bette, you’ve had it pretty damn good lately, a relationship with Jodi and a friendship with Tina.  Maybe Jodi isn’t as enlightened as you think she is, maybe she should be jealous of you’re friendship with Tina and isn’t because she doesn’t love you enough.  Tina has settled for being friends because it is a whole lot better than the alternative, passing that Angel back and forth through me every week and not having you in her life.  You’ve got the truth now and opportunity to choose what you truly want.  Try not to think about what you should do or what you’ve promised for minute.  What do you want Bette?’”

    “I don’t know.”

     ********

Bette truly did not know what she wanted and realized that she needed to think about it in a serious way and The Planet wasn’t the place.  Bette did what she had done many times before, she called James and she wouldn’t be back in the office and to only call her if it was urgent.  Knowing she could trust James to keep the hounds at bay, Bette took off on drive of her own.

Bette had worked hard at moving on from her relationship with Tina.  The demise of their relationship was one of the major disappointments of her life.  Between their problems communicating and the way they had drifted apart, the miscarriage, Bette’s cheating, losing her job and father, simultaneously losing both her identity as a successful woman and as Melvin’s daughter, their dismal attempt at reconciliation with their arguments over what Bette considered a temporary setback in their finances while she was trying to find a job that would make her happy, finally culminating in Tina’s admission of her desire for men before her second parent adoption had been approved… all of it left Bette feeling lost and lower than she ever had in her life.  These tribulations had changed Bette.  Bette felt that Tina had ultimately rejected her body and soul.  Bette had tried to her hardest to change and in Bette’s eyes all Tina had done was gripe and push her farther away.  Bette knew that her affair had been the catalyst, but she didn’t believe she should shoulder all of the blame. At the time, she felt that what was left of herself had turned into a hollow shell filled with anger and fear.  Faced with the real or imagined threat of losing her child, the one thing that still mattered in her life, Bette did the stupidest thing she had ever done, she took Angelica from Tina’s custody without her permission.

    1. I always find it interesting as to what writers read into the JoBette relationship to justify Bette putting up with her shit..not to mention the lack of chemistry onscreen. I’m glad you put some depth into the Tina character. She has future plans. She has fun on the side when she is out of town without Angelica. I’m glad she didn’t third wheel it with Bette and Jodi.. she is better than that BS. Plus, I like that you addressed the Alice issue. While I hated Tina going back to men I always thought Alice was super immature about it.

    2. madcapper, that was really good…poor bette, its such a frustrating place to be, with those worries about the future. i think you’ve drawn it all out really well. i felt it right at the end, that ‘damn’ feeling and i swear, i sighed along with her! great work, really good.

    3. I look forward to more initimate conversations like the one Bette and Tina just shared. To me that is what a true relationship is built on. Time spent talking about whatever comes up. Tina was right in going off on her own for Christmas, even though she is feels all alone now. It seems that both Bette and Tina feel all alone together.

    4. I have been waiting and hoping that you would continue this story. All of your stories are so well written. Thanks for this–can’t wait for the next chapter! Lin

    5. Bette, they were the worst of times, but they were the best. You gotta take the good with the bad, and with Tina you bad was always made better. Love the conversation between the two, a few more like that should do it. Bette, Tina has not moved on without you, she’s just waiting for you to open up your awesomely beautiful eyes, and see that she’s been right there all along. Jodi, sorry, you and Bette have never and will never have that special connection that make B&T who they are and what we love.
