The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 30

“Not all the time. Usually just when I have a large amount of stress or anxiety. Or if I’m thinking of certain…certain things.”

Dr. Burrows had a soothing voice. “How often is not often?”

“Maybe a few times a week. This week has been pretty intense.”

    “And why is that?”

Bette cleared her throat again, rubbing her hands together. “I had a show to put together. I own an art gallery and had an artist dinner and exhibition debut last week. And my….my wife….ex-wife….has been in the hospital. She had an overdose.”

The therapist looked confused. “I thought she was in rehab?”

Bette nodded. “She was. She started rehab on Friday. She overdosed a week ago on Sunday. She almost died.”

“Well I’m sure that was very traumatic for you.”

Bette shrugged and looked away. “She overdosed because she felt guilty. For….for what she did.”

    “And what did she do?”

Bette’s eyes filled with tears and her chest began to heave. Dr. Burrows stood up and grabbed a box of tissue, placing it close to Bette. She then went to her electric tea kettle and turned it on. As Bette collected herself, Dr. Burrows made Bette a cup of cinnamon and cardamom tea, placing a matching teacup and saucer on the table before her.

Dr. Burrows had kind, dark brown eyes. She met Bette’s gaze before taking her seat again.

“Take your time, Bette. There’s no rush here. When we run out of time today, we’ll just regroup during our next visit. Is that okay?” asked Dr. Burrows.

Bette nodded. “Thank you,” she said, picking up the saucer and tea cup.

“You are more than welcome. I hope you like it.”

Bette smiled softly. “It smells great.”

They talked of other, less traumatic subjects. Dr. Burrows gave Bette a few techniques to try that would help her relax when she felt the need to use. She also prescribed Bette some anti-anxiety medication and recommended an app that many other patients found helpful to quiet their minds.

At the end of the visit, Bette felt better, calmer, more relaxed. She liked that Dr. Burrows wasn’t forcing her to disclose anything. She wasn’t quite ready to talk about what had happened with Sidney and Dr. Burrows didn’t push. With an appointment scheduled for the next Monday, Bette left the office with a sense of peace that helped settle her.

    1. Wow….Bette has a real temper. Attacking Shane at the Planet is rather troubling. Is this a residual effect of the attack she received from Sidney? Violent behavior is never a good thing regardless of the reason or motivation. Bette needs more than therapy to stay sober, she needs a bit of anger management treatment as well.

      Great chapter…..looking forward to more.

    2. Thank you!

I’m must say that i liked how Bette resolved Shane’s problem in Planet. Sure gave her the cops would be better (can’t Tasha help?) but this was not bad also.

      Waiting for the next!

    3. Great chapter shows Bette has a breaking point even if it was directed at the wrong person. Shane’s just a supplier she didnt force them down anyone throat. The real person she mad at is Sidney. And so she will have to deal with Tina and her life. Hope therapy helps before she get to that point. Thank you

    4. Thanks for posting!

Somehow I think that Shane might not be supplier but one of her employees.
Bette’s therapist seems to be the right choice. I like the way Naomi works with Bette and I still hope that Bette will open up and tell her about the rape.

Could her attorney be the right one for Tina as well? Someone who finds a glitch in Tina’s prenuptial? I like the idea that Harry has an affair – or more than one – for some time now. Would be fun to watch Papa Kennard’s face when H admits it.

      pps
