The Night Has Been Unkind – Short Story

Bette was pulled back, confused and horrified, waking with a start. She bolted up in bed, realizing she was breathing heavily, in a cold sweat. She put her hand over her chest and let out a deep breath, whispering one word. "Tina."

I will be there for you
    While you take the time.

She got up from bed, her feet finding their own way. She had one destination and she wouldn’t be deterred. Thinking back, she brushed her teeth and dressed. Times she had seen Tina with their friends; times she had meant to say everything she hadn’t before. So many times she had wanted just one hug but couldn’t find the words. Tina belonged in her arms.

One memory resounded clearly, and she couldn’t help but replay it as she dressed herself.

"So, Bette …" Tina started nervously, obviously trying to hide her incredible pain. She swirled her glass, trying to gather herself.

Bette watched in horror. Had she done this to Tina?

Tina was trying to calm herself, but without realizing it, a tear coursed down, over the slope of her cheek. Her gaze was fixed on the floor, but her eyes closed the instant she felt Bette’s warm fingers sweeping it away. She needed a soothing touch, and it felt so right, but she pulled her own cheek away when she heard their friends quickly approaching. She opened her eyes to Bette’s melancholy gaze. They were both so deeply troubled.

    In the burning of uncertainty,
I will be your solid ground.

Looking sadly into the mirror, Bette tried fixing her hair, her mind quickly thinking back to so many other instances between her and Tina since her affair became public knowledge. "Jesus," she whispered to herself, always wishing to stand strong, but seeing that it was impossible. She had wronged the love of her life. And in that moment, she knew she needed to see Tina. She needed to make this right.

She grabbed her car keys and headed out the door, another instance surfacing.

And I will hold the balance, if you can’t look down.

"I miss you," she whispered, looking over Tina’s beautiful blue dress, nearing her. They had spoken in anger, but she needed to be closer. Now she was glad for her own bravery. It let her indulge in another moment with the blond. "T?"

    1. I swear I’m crying like Bette was while writing this. GOD. You are sooo amazing. You can write such insanely mercurial fics and yet at times you just sweep us away by such intense emotional fics like this. I’m utterly blown away by all the raw emotion shown in this one and you’re right, the song was brilliant and so apt. Are you planning to continue this one? Cos’ I think it can go further, if not, just continue doing what you’re doing. It’s a winning formula! =)) Thanks for this GrindRight, (although I’ll probably have to explain to my mom why I’m bawling my eyes out), PPVS! =))

    2. this is so sad but beautiful, bettes love for tine is so deep and tina..she cant help herself.plssssssssssss give us a little moreim crying and i dont know why…gosh if my gf will ever leave me i will be just like bette..

    3. Wow Grind – that was beautiful, heartbreaking, sad, and yet hopeful… But there is so much more to this – I do hope you are planning sequels – i see a lot more push & pull in their future in your scenario – all beautifully written by yourself & leaving us readers in a whirlpool of emmotion. I feel like i’ve just been put through a cycle in the washing machine! PPVS 5*

    4. This was absolutely heartwrenching. So sad, so full of emotion, yet so beautiful in the way that Tina knew it was Bette at the door without seeing her. So glad she asked her to come up and took her in to bed. They both needed the closeness and to feel their love. I agree wholeheartedly with Tigger. And yes, I’m crying too. Thanks.

    5. You have a wonderful writing talent. You can go from passionate, raw and detailed sexual stories that also take great ability to gut wrenching, vulnerable, raw, open, honest emotional stories w/o the story appearing too maudlin. Just amazing.

    6. Oh my…this is some gorgeous writing. I am ever so grateful to have the opportunity to read your writing…such talent…such beauty. I’m still taking it all in…thank you for this experience.
