    Chapter 7: Learning to deal, learning to feel…but not learning much (Bette meets Christina and Tina meets Professor Franklin)

    Eric began to understand that Tina was way serious about all of this and he frantically tried to find his way out of this sticky situation. He knew he lost the game and had to pay.

    “You know”, Tina said tiredly, “I looked up to you and even thought about a future together. Now, I loathe you for hurting my friend, for being a coward, and for playing me for a fool. At least I know now what a piece of shit you are. I would love nothing more for you to get what you deserve, but I can’t return the boy to his mother, and Carmen is my closest friend, who suffered a lot because of you and I want her to live happier, knowing that you get punished for what you did to her. So, here’s the phone, I’m waiting…”

    Eric looked so defeated and broken but Tina suddenly realized that she didn’t feel any pity or compassion towards him. In fact, she had no emotions whatsoever for a man she thought she was in love with for the last two years. It scared her a little because she didn’t want to turn into a cold, heartless and emotionless bitch.

     

    ‘I only feel this way because of this scumbag standing in front of me,’ Tina thought, looking at Eric with disgust while he was calling the police.

     

    She called Carmen after Eric made his phone call and told her to go ahead and inform police officers who worked on her case that it was Eric who raped her. Carmen was still a little worried about her family and friends but Tina reassured her and laughed happily when she heard cheerful ‘hurray’ on a background, when she told Carmen about Eric being taken away in a matter of minutes.

     

    Tina waited with Eric until the police showed up and took him into custody. With the feeling of relief and some pride for helping to put him away, and knowing that she put a smile on her friend’s face, Tina finally was free to return to the mystery of the gorgeous stranger on her miniature painting.

     

    Tina already called Professor Franklin while she was in the hospital Saturday morning during her first visit with Carmen and rescheduled the appointment for Tuesday. She was so anxious to talk to the professor, so she could learn something about the painting and that beautiful face that captured her heart and mind.
