    Chapter 7: Learning to deal, learning to feel…but not learning much (Bette meets Christina and Tina meets Professor Franklin)

     

    ‘What is happening? Her touch was so soft and brief but I felt as if electric shock passed through my body. I wonder if she noticed me tremble a little. Why do I feel this way, what is happening? She is so beautiful.’ Elizabeth’s thoughts were circling like crazy in her head and she was completely smitten by Christina, and it made her feel confused.

     

    “Congratulations, Ms. Rad…I mean…Mrs. Kennard, I’m really happy for you,” Elizabeth said sincerely, finally finding her voice and snapping out of her perplexing thoughts.

     

    “Please, call me Christina, I’m still getting use to my new name,” Christina said with a little chuckle.

     

    “Only if you’ll call me Bette,” Elizabeth said, suddenly feeling happy and playful.

     

    “Bette? What kind of name is that, Elizabeth?” Maxine asked when she heard Elizabeth’s last words.

     

    “My friends call me that, Mother,” Elizabeth replied in a firm tone that made Maxine understand that if her daughter was set on something, she wouldn’t change her mind. Maxine recognized that stubbornness was her trait as well, so she just smiled and decided not to pursue the issue.

     

    Only then did Elizabeth remember that Alicia was still in the room. She turned to her and was about to say something when the sight of her made Elizabeth stop in her tracks.

     

    Alicia was just standing there in awe, staring at Christina as if she had seen a ghost. She looked so pale, it was as if all the blood suddenly rushed out of her face and for a moment Elizabeth was worried about her health. She was surprised to see the effect that the newcomer had had on Alicia. Her mouth was opened wide, her eyes were popping out of their sockets, and sweat was forming on her forehead.

     

    Christina wasn’t even aware of what was taking place because she was in deep conversation with Maxine about what kind of paintings she would like to present at the festival.

     

    “Alicia, are you okay?” Elizabeth asked quietly, slightly concerned about Alicia’s reaction. She didn’t know if these feelings were caused by fear for Alicia’s health, or some sort of jealousy that she wasn’t the only one hypnotized by Christina’s beauty.

To be honest, I really like the build up, and don’t mind waiting a bit more for their meeting. Especially given the nature of your intrigue, it really needs the background stories.
