My One Special One – Chapter 20

“Even something etched in stone can be changed, Bette.  It may take a little time and attention, but it can be changed.”

“I’m not him…I’m not him…I am not him…” Bette kept repeating over and over again.

    “You’re not who?”

Bette wiped her eyes. “My father, T.  I’ve said those words over and over again trying to convince myself that I’m not the womanizer he was…and how have I spent all my adult life?  Doing exactly what he did – jumping from one woman’s bed to another.  Never, ever holding on to a relationship.  Sure, he married them, but then was on his way to the next girl and often times it was while he was still married…Tina, I can’t do that to you.  I love you with all my heart.  I love you more than I have ever thought I was capable of loving.  But if I am my father’s daughter and doomed to repeat exactly what he did in his life – because that’s the only example or role model I have, I won’t do it.  I could not live with myself if I hurt you the way he hurt my mother and my sister’s mother – and God knows who else’s mother along the way.   Yet I want you with me and I want to be with you…I am so fucked up… and so fucking much in love with you.  Why in the world would you want to marry me?”

“That’s a very good question.  Do you want to know the answer?”

Bette couldn’t help but grin through the tears.  “Well, it really was a rhetorical question, honey.”

“Too fucking bad, Porter.  You’re going to have to listen to me.  Why in the world would I want to marry you?  I want to marry you, Bette, because each morning when I open my eyes and I see you lying next to me, my heart smiles and I whisper a ‘thank you’ to the Universe for the blessing of you in my life.  Each night I want the last sensation you feel to be the warmth of my lips on yours and the last words you hear to be I love you.    Each day when you leave for work I want you to remember that the woman you just left is the woman who has committed herself to you and you alone; for you to be assured that this woman trusts you with her life and knows you would never utter a vow unless you meant to keep it.    I want to marry you in front of friends and the world because I want to state my love and devotion to you for all to hear.  I want to be yours…signed, sealed and delivered…and a ring on my finger, too.

    1. Hey Arceextl, That was jaw droppingly beautiful as Bette suddenly became the child and Tina the adult. It was tender as Tina coaxed the truth from her lover about her fears and issues with repeating the past. Thankfully Tina was there to reassure and support Bette throught this troublesome sea of concerns and navigate Bette to the safe haven that is Tina’s warm and welcoming arms. Gorgeous and gentle. Thank you for this pleasure and delight. Your Loyal Fan.

    2. I love this story and your writing, I hope you know that by now, but this chapter wasn’t doing it for me I’m sorry to say. I can’t exactly say why, only that this wasn’t the way it should’ve happened if you ask me…..I don’t feel that Bette wants this 100%. But I’m really looking forward to the wedding and especially the honeymoon LOL. Post soon…

    3. Wow, so beautiful! Bette said YES, that’s a good thing, though I feel they might be rushing things a little. I mysself would be happy just moving together without doing the marriage thing as well. Ove your story, so keep it coming! Thanks for posting!

    4. I love your poems, they are eyes to most of our inner souls. You can love someone and still struggle. Usually that struggle is whether they are still going to be there when you wake up. I am glad that you posted this chapter. This story brings two beings together with all their flaws and pain and puts them together as one.

    5. R – I agree…’family’ isn’t defined by blood. Blood means nothing to the body without the heart – the organ that pumps the blood. If you listen to your heart it will tell you who your family is. I love your writing, your story, and especially your poems. Thanks for writing, and as always, can’t wait for more.

    6. Beautiful. It always sends a chill through my spine when the communication between these two is so open. Tina can be such a pillar of strength and Bette is so lovely when she opens up and shares her insecurities . I love this story.

    7. I swear I could go through a whole box of tissues reading your work. lol So Bette didn’t say yes, but in a roundabout way she did. All that matters is she didn’t say no. Looking forward to more!

    8. sounded as close as a yes to me… love this story… love how bette opened up to tina… and i know they will always be there for each other… bette and tina forever… thanks… please continue

    10. Tina was so good she was the stronger in a difficult time for Bette and she give a lot of senses to her. The poem was great. you are doing so great, everytime the waiting is worthy with you job.
