My One Special One – Chapter 20

“It’s not the death march, Bette.  At least, that’s not how I view it.”

“No, Baby, I don’t mean it’s the death march to a relationship.  Look…”   Bette stepped closer to Tina.  “It’s the final step for me.  I don’t want to do it more than once.  I don’t want to commit my heart, my soul and the rest of my days more than once in my lifetime.”

Bette wrapped her arm around Tina’s waist and pulled her close.  She leaned in and placed her cheek next to Tina’s.

Why is this so hard? Bette thought.  This is Tina.  She is unlike any other woman you’ve been with in your life.  She loves you; you love her.  Simple.  For God’s sake, Porter, you just asked her to move in with you, isn’t marriage the next step? Of course it is, but the truth is it hasn’t got anything to do with Tina; it has everything to do with me.  What fucking shining example did I have of marriage, commitment, loyalty or trust?  My father?  Yeah, right.  A bad man? No.  A womanizer?  You bet.  He hopped from one bed to the next, each time while ‘committed’ to someone.

Then the recognition of her deepest fear exploded behind her eyes and exited from her tear ducts in raging rivulets down her face.  Her body began to shake and she held on to Tina as if she were the life raft afloat in the sea of her tears.

Tina was taken back a bit when she felt Bette crumbling in her arms.  She had seen Bette upset but this was beyond that.  Tina somehow knew if she let go of Bette, this normally tall, proud and strong woman would emotionally disintegrate to the floor.

“Bette, Baby, talk to me.  What’s wrong?  Tell me.  I’m here.  You can say anything to me.” Tina pleaded.

“I’m so scared, Tina.” Bette managed to say through her sobs.

“Of what, Baby?  What is making you so upset?  I’ve never seen you like this.  Whatever it is, it can be fixed.”

“What if it can’t, T?  What if it can’t be fixed?  What if it’s set in stone and can’t be erased?”

    1. Hey Arceextl, That was jaw droppingly beautiful as Bette suddenly became the child and Tina the adult. It was tender as Tina coaxed the truth from her lover about her fears and issues with repeating the past. Thankfully Tina was there to reassure and support Bette throught this troublesome sea of concerns and navigate Bette to the safe haven that is Tina’s warm and welcoming arms. Gorgeous and gentle. Thank you for this pleasure and delight. Your Loyal Fan.

    2. I love this story and your writing, I hope you know that by now, but this chapter wasn’t doing it for me I’m sorry to say. I can’t exactly say why, only that this wasn’t the way it should’ve happened if you ask me…..I don’t feel that Bette wants this 100%. But I’m really looking forward to the wedding and especially the honeymoon LOL. Post soon…

    3. Wow, so beautiful! Bette said YES, that’s a good thing, though I feel they might be rushing things a little. I mysself would be happy just moving together without doing the marriage thing as well. Ove your story, so keep it coming! Thanks for posting!

    4. I love your poems, they are eyes to most of our inner souls. You can love someone and still struggle. Usually that struggle is whether they are still going to be there when you wake up. I am glad that you posted this chapter. This story brings two beings together with all their flaws and pain and puts them together as one.

    5. R – I agree…’family’ isn’t defined by blood. Blood means nothing to the body without the heart – the organ that pumps the blood. If you listen to your heart it will tell you who your family is. I love your writing, your story, and especially your poems. Thanks for writing, and as always, can’t wait for more.

    6. Beautiful. It always sends a chill through my spine when the communication between these two is so open. Tina can be such a pillar of strength and Bette is so lovely when she opens up and shares her insecurities . I love this story.

    7. I swear I could go through a whole box of tissues reading your work. lol So Bette didn’t say yes, but in a roundabout way she did. All that matters is she didn’t say no. Looking forward to more!

    8. sounded as close as a yes to me… love this story… love how bette opened up to tina… and i know they will always be there for each other… bette and tina forever… thanks… please continue
