    Tina hears from the past; Sinister folks attempting to ruin her future with Bette?

     

    “They’re on their way.”

     

    “Thank God because one more ‘young lady’ out of that black-robed jerk and I think I’m going to explode.”

     

    “Easy there, Tiger.  He’s bating you.  It’s so freaking evident.  Just keep your eye on the prize.  There’s a lot riding on this one and you’re too good a lawyer to let him get to you.  Okay?”

     

    “I know, Steve…damn, he does piss me off though.”

     

    “He’s an ass.  Everyone knows it.  He’s on the bench not because of his legal acuity but good old boy bucks that got him elected.  His law clerk should be getting Chuck E. Cheese’s salary.  He’s the one that gets him through any big decisions he makes. 

     

    “Chuck E. Cheese?”

     

    “Yeah, he’s loud, looks like the rat in their logo and possesses a personality that is about as palatable as the food they serve.”

     

    Two detectives turned the corner at the end of the hall and were walking quickly towards Tina and Steve.  Tina saw them over Steve’s shoulder.

    They began talking and apologizing before they even reached her.

     

    “Hey, Tina, damn, we’re sorry.  We got caught up in another case – the  paperwork – a couple of witnesses…”

     

    “You’re here. That’s all I care about.  Let’s get in there.  With any luck we’ll at least get one of you done today.”

     

    By the time Tina and Steve reached counsel table, the Bailiff was bringing in the Jury.  Tina was going through her notes and felt as if someone was staring at her.  She turned her head slowly towards the left.  There, leaning forward in front of his attorney and in her direction, was the smirking, smug face of the defendant staring directly into Tina’s eyes.

     

    “Are you ready to proceed now, Miss Kennard?”

     

    Tina’s head snapped forward and she stood.  “Yes, the Commonwealth calls Detective Rick Cavalli to the stand.”

     

    Defense attorney Pete Roteck rose.  “Your Honor, sequestration of all Commonwealth witnesses, please.”

     

    Tina turned to the second Detective and nodded.  He knew the routine and was already standing and made his exit from the courtroom.

     

    “Let’s move it along, Miss Kennard,” Judge Morris gruffly barked.

     

    Fuck you, Chuck E Cheese…Tina tacitly thought, along with a brief wonder if this guy’s mother in retrospect could easily have wished or dreamed of the choices in Roe v. Wade.  After all, if you knew ahead of time of the ‘monster’ in your belly…

    13. I can’t remember if it was last night or this morning when I wondered when you’d have time to post a new chapter. I finally managed to finish up on your first story after reading it off and on for several months (I’m a slow reader…shush =p) and absolutely loved it. Normally I’d think, “Lawyers, courts…zzzzzzzz…BOOOOOOOOOOOOORING!” But having B&T involved makes it very interesting. It’s like you snuck in law lessons without me even knowing. Sneaky. ;) 8675309 stars for you! =D
