Just The Girl – Chapter Twenty Six (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Whoops.” Sam smiled sheepishly. “I just thought you were.. uhh.. sleeping. Closed eyes and all..” She explained with a slight shrug.

Bette sighed. She hasn’t seen herself on a mirror yet, but she was sure her eyes were thick and swollen. Why can’t she be like those movie stars who still looked amazingly beautiful even when they cried buckets? Right now, she probably looked like.. like.. “Shit..” She sniffled. She probably looked like Quasimodo. You know.. from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.. big guy.. disfigured face. Tina’s voice bounced inside her head. She bit her lower lip to stop herself from breaking down again.

    “Bette?” Sam prodded once more.

“Daddy..” Bette started as she laid herself down on her back and covered her eyes with her palms. “Made me choose between Kennard and money.” She sighed, exhaustion and sadness evident in her voice.

“Oh.” Sam pursed her lips in understanding. Of course he did, she smiled bitterly, they were expecting Uncle Luc to do that. She turned around and reached for her cell phone on the night stand. She flipped it open and started typing a message. Phase Four should be initiated soon.. and when she said soon, she meant now.

“What are you doing?” Bette removed her hands from her eyes as she heard the distinct sound of fingers typing on keys. She frowned as she watched Sam seriously texting someone on her cell phone.

“Helping you make a decision.” Sam smiled as she flipped her phone shut. More specifically, helping you by making the decision-making process easier, she smiled cryptically.

“So that’s what happened..” Jenny leaned her back against her chair as she took in what her best friend had just shared with her. She didn’t pry on the drive back home last night, knowing that Tina wasn’t ready to talk just yet. Looking at the argument from an outsider’s perspective, she could say that both girls had a point.. and both girls had their faults. Tina was wrong for trying to take the easy route, Bette was wrong for taking the confrontational escape route. She looked at the blonde beside her and sighed. Tina looked so lost and helpless, she couldn’t help but feel for what her best friend must be going through. “What’s your plan?” She gently asked as she leaned forward and placed her hand comfortingly over Tina’s limp one on the table.

    2. Wow! What an awesome letter by Tina. She clarified her feelings for Bette while at the same time telling her that she needs to stop walking away when it is convenient for her. I loved the drama! Can’t wait for more!

    3. Bette’s willingness to give it all up to be with Tina is amazing, but I see Tina’s fears as something they do need to face if they are going to be successful thwarting the evil Melvin.
