Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“So I’m guessing that’s your ride?” The older lady spoke up when they neared their destination, pointing at a bright red Chevy parked right outside the gate to the private terminal.

“Yes.” Tina chuckled, watching a big blonde man waving frantically at them from the other side of the fence – his tanned face showing no signs of his real age as he flashed the happiest boyish grin in the world.

“I have to tell you, Percy over there..” Rosie nodded towards her colleague who was stationed at the gate. “..has been radioing us for the past three hours, warning us about another potential Tina Kennard situation in our midst.” Rosie shared with a booming laugh. Everyone was on stand-by and high alert, ready to pounce and restrain when the Incredible Blonde Hulk, as they had affectionately dubbed him, would ever dare burst through the barricade when the plane he was waiting so giddily for starts to land. “Little did we know that we literally had another Kennard in our hands.” She continued, pulling up in her assigned parking space. “Your dad, I presume?”

“The one and only, Kenneth Kennard.” Tina beamed, proud of her father despite how silly he looked cry-smiling by the gate. She was surprised and admittedly, a little disappointed, that he didn’t have a welcome home banner with him; Ken had made one for her and Bette during their first visit back to LA after she had transferred to Yale. It was morbidly embarrassing, yet deeply touching at the same time. “Thanks again Rosie, see you in a few days!” She waved goodbye to the chuckling woman and grabbed her luggage from the back of the cart. The daddy’s girl inside of her came out in full force as she ran out the gate and jumped into the waiting arms of the most important man in her life. “Daddy!” She giggled happily, feeling her feet leaving the ground as Ken’s strong arms twirled her around as if she were completely weightless.

“Welcome home, sweetheart!” Ken peppered the side of his daughter’s head with tiny kisses before settling her down on the pavement. Sloppily, he wiped the moisture in his eyes with the sleeve of his flannel shirt. As usual, he let his emotions get the best of him. But he didn’t care, he just couldn’t hold in the waterworks after seeing his baby up close. It’s been too long since her last visit. “You look so..” Ken kept his little Tina at arms length, appraising his daughter’s appearance. She wasn’t fat, but she definitely gained a few pounds. “..so.. so.. uh..” He furrowed his brows, his smile a little too huge not to be seen as contrived. “..big.” He managed to choke out. Before Tina could raise a questioning eyebrow, he was quick enough to add.. “You’ve grown since the last time I saw you..” He brought a hand on top of Tina’s head and moved it towards his chest, trying to let her think that he was talking about her height – when in actuality, she didn’t grow an inch taller of her 5’6” frame.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
