Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“And you look so..” Tina bit her bottom lip, gazing at her father’s round face down to the beer belly jutting out of his shirt. This one has definitely been packing a lot of beers and junk since her last visit. “..so.. so.. err..” She grappled for a nice, polite term. “..healthy.” She smiled up at him.

The two Kennards chuckled for a moment before the truth behind their words hit the both of them like a ton of bricks. The laughter died on their lips and knowing looks replaced the mirth in their matching hazel eyes.

“Heeeeey..” They both said at the same time, fingers pointed and eyes squinting at each other.

Offering a truce, Ken playfully ruffled his daughter’s hair and guided her by the shoulders to the passenger side of his new truck – a nice reward he got for himself from the healthy salary he received from the vineyard. That Dana Fairbanks was a generous boss. “Here ya go, m’lady. Watch your head please.” He opened the door and helped his daughter in. When she was all settled, he went round the back, gathered up his daughter’s bag and put it in the trunk. “You sure packed light.” He commented when he took his place beside Tina and started the engine.

“I figured I didn’t need to bring a lot. I’ve got a couple of clothes back at the apartment.” Tina yawned, a little tired from the long flight despite jacking up enough sweets to keep her up for three nights.

“You do.” Ken agreed, pulling out of the parking area and out unto the street. “But how sure are you that they’d fit, chubby?” He added snidely.

“What did you say?” Tina frowned. She could’ve sworn she heard some naughty mumbling from the innocent-looking man.

    “Nothing.” Ken was all smiles.

Tina narrowed her eyes, but didn’t press any further. There were a lot of things she had missed about him, but high on the list was exchanging barbs and teasing words with her father. With an affectionate snarl, she stuck out her tongue at Ken and turned her head to gaze out the opened window. The east coast had its appeal and overall charm, but nothing could beat the warm California sunshine. And man, if there was one thing her pale skin needed, it was a good o’l tan.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
