Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“I wanted to clear my head.”

“How bad was it this time?” Sam asked, her voice laced with understanding.

Bette sighed. How bad was it? “I almost called her up eleven times since I woke up this morning. That’s four more since yesterday night before I fell asleep.”

“How did you stop yourself this time?” Sam questioned. The other day, Bette had banned all cellular phones inside her home. The house phones were all disconnected too. But this rule of hers was overturned when Melvin went home and discovered that he had missed several important faxed documents because of his daughter’s peculiar whim.

“I asked Sonja to tie my hands to the bed and keep my cellphone from me for the meantime.”

Sam grimaced. The mere fact that she was talking to Bette now told her all that she needed to know. “How’s the bed?”

    “Broken.”

    “Sonja?”

    “Traumatized.”

    “She okay?”

    “She asked for a day-off.”

    “You allowed her?”

“Of course. I gave her a suite at the Waldorf.”

    “That’s very generous of you.”

“I needed to make it up for ransacking her bedroom and slashing all her pillows open with a knife.”

    “…”

“She hid my phone in one of them. Clever, actually. Would’ve worked had she only remembered to turn it off.”

    “Someone called?”

“Just when I was rummaging through her clothes.”

    “Poor Sonja.”

“I’ll buy her new ones.” Bette waved a hand. Forcing a casual tone, she blurted out.. “Did uh.. did Alice call up Kennard?”

“She did.” Sam’s answer was short, her eyes darting towards the blonde in front of her. With just one look, Alice understood. She squinted her eyes in warning at Sam and put a finger over her lips. If they wanted Tina to continue keeping in touch with them, they needed to keep the info they shared with Bette to a minimum. It’s a trust thing, Tina had said.

    “How is she?”

    “Fine.”

“When is she coming back to New York for her internship at Focus?”

    “Soon.”

Bette hesitated for a moment. “Did she ask about me?” She said slowly, carefully; before holding her breath.

“She uh..” Sam bit the tip of her thumb. Will she lie or tell Bette the truth? Respect Tina’s wishes or give someone whose mind, heart and body were literally wandering through a forest a little hope? In the end, the bestfriend in her won the argument.. “She did.” Hey, honesty was the best policy – and what’s that saying about throwing the dog a bone?

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
