Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“I dunno, something remotely insignificant that my mind wouldn’t be bothered to remember?”

“Nice try.” Sam laughed dryly, playing off her friend’s feeble attempt to get out of trouble. “Brunch at my place.”

    “Shit.”

    “You forgot, didn’t you?”

“Fuck, it totally slipped my mind..” Bette rubbed her scrunched forehead and clicked her tongue, reproaching herself. She had taken the car out for a spin a few hours ago, but she got lost in the freedom of it all that.. “I forgot about you guys..”

“Well that’s comforting.” Sam said sarcastically. “This is the third time you stood us up.”

“I know, and I’m really sorry..” Bette apologized to the disappointed girl for the hundredth time since they left Yale to spend their summer vacation in New York, knowing that she probably sounded like a broken record with her constant need to apologize for some misdeed or gross oversight. “My mind’s been flying all over the place lately..”

“Biggest understatement of the year.” The brunette on the other line scoffed. “You know what, you-” Sam started but then stopped, feeling something warm on her forearm. She wanted to say some more, to let her annoyance show, but she stopped herself in the nick of time – actually, someone did. Helena’s touch, her girlfriend’s subtle way of calming her, reminded Sam of how much patience and understanding Bette needed right now. Without Tina here, her bestfriend was literally falling apart – and it was up to her and her friends to pick up the pieces. Conspiring with James, they had to make excuses to a clueless Melvin when Bette would skip out of meetings at the PGC or go AWOL in official events and parties that she was scheduled to attend. Bette didn’t mean to do those things on purpose, in all honesty, she just forgot about them. Bette has been, for a lack of a better description, a scatterbrain recently. Like she had said a few moments ago, it was like her mind couldn’t be bothered to think of other things when all she wanted to dwell on was Tina and Tina alone. “We haven’t started eating yet. You can still catch up..” Sam reached out, garnering an approving smile from Helena.

    “Uh.. I don’t know if I can..”

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
