Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

But she didn’t. Cause like a splash of cold water on her exhilarated face, commonsense beckoned and rang loudly beside her ear – seemingly drowning out the sound of the engine with a soft, yet strangely overpowering music. Her cellphone was ringing, but before she could answer the call, she saved herself first. She pulled her feet from the accelerator and transferred it to the brakes, getting the speed down to a manageable degree so that when she hit the turn, she didn’t fly off the edge of the mountain like she would have done had she not slowed down.

    80.. 75.. 70.. 65.. and 60.

She made sure that she was back into that speed before she answered the call. The call that, in all respects, saved her life. The only thing that was going fast now was her beating heart. And she had to take measured breaths before she put the bluetooth earpiece on and pressed the accept button on her ringing mobile.

“Good morning!” She greeted with as much enthusiasm she could muster, though she was a little shaken, remnants of her jovial mood still lingered.

    “Where the heck are you?!”

Bette chuckled, all the while expertly shifting gears and decelerating her car to a respectably slow 50mph. “Straight to the point, eh? What, no time for pleasantries?”

    “No.” Sam answered curtly.

    “Why not?”

    “Cause I’m hurt..”

“Aw, you are?” Bette cooed, a pandering smile in place. She wasn’t worried, her bestfriend’s tone told her that there was no real emergency whatsoever. No reason to stress.

    “I am. I’m very hurt..”

    “Why?”

“Cause I got you an obscenely beautiful limited edition Franck Muller watch for your birthday – which I shopped for myself and not some assistant of mine, mind you – but you don’t seem to be using my very generous and thoughtful gift as promised..”

“I’m wearing it right now.” Bette gazed briefly at the hand that was resting on the steering wheel. The square shaped watch was there on her wrist, the little diamonds that adorned it scattering off the sunlight that hit them. Thank God that she was wearing thick sunglasses or she might’ve been blind by now.

“You might be wearing it, but clearly, you’re not using it.” Sam pointed out slowly, evenly. “Cause if you were,” She continued. “You’d know that it was 10:30 AM.. and you know what’s happening at 10:30?”

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
