Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

To someone new to such antiquated models, driving a car such as this one was a big headache. One wrong move and the car would stall. One clumsy mistake and the engine would sputter and die on you. There was an art in driving these beauties. And this particular one, required more finesse than the rest. It can act up when driven by a novice, but handle it right; smoothen the transition between shifting gears, release the clutch and step on the gas fluidly, and wow – the engine purrs and roars like nothing else. And this made Bette’s smile wider as she drove through the beautiful mountainous wonderland somewhere in the state of New York. This remarkable old car was living up to its namesake – both by power and grace, and of course, with its beauty.

    70, the speedometer showed. 75.. 80.. 85.. 90..

Faster! Her mind screamed, adrenaline pumping through her veins, prompting her to push the pedal even deeper. In the freeway, this speed was acceptable; heck, required even. But in these parts, where the roads twist and turn and teether dangerously close to the slopping edge of a steep mountain, speeding was definitely suicidal. 60, according to the law, was acceptable but also pushing it. But she was Bette Porter, and Bette Porter loved pushing things to even greater heights – to her detriment, and maybe, God forbid, to her death.

95.. 100.. The wind was whipping at her face, blowing away her hair like a flag caught in a tornado. But she didn’t mind this one bit. This was the first time she felt free in days, and in some odd way, the wind and the speed were driving away all the thoughts and feelings that burdened her mind and heart. And she reveled at this freedom she felt; enjoyed it to the full because of how fleeting it was bound to be.

105.. 110.. Faster and faster she went. She zoomed past a road sign that warned her of a sharp turn a few meters away, but despite this, she didn’t decelerate. Reckless, utterly reckless. Maybe, a damning voice in her mind said, maybe if she could fast-forward through things like these, three weeks would fly by in a blink of an eye. So with a crazed, almost maniacal glint in her eye, she poised her feet to push even deeper into the pedal.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
