Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“You were saving the pen?” Ken arched a brow.

    “Uh-huh. It looks mighty expensive.”

“Actually, I got that for free in Walmart.”

    “…”

“You know honey,” Ken started after a moment, his tone serious and devoid of the lightness it contained just moments before. “I get why you’d want to focus all your energies on hating Bette, and believe me, you have every reason to get mad at her for lying to you about whatsherface – but I can tell you from personal experience that you’ll be the one suffering from it in the long run. Hating is a draining business.” He scooted closer to his baby girl and affectionately stroked her hair, knowing how much it relaxed Tina. “One day, you’d be surprised to look in the mirror and see yourself looking older than your years, grossly overweight and ugly as hell..” He warned with all the best intentions, remembering what happened to him when Tina’s mom left. Ken paused. “Oh wait a minute-” He looked at his daughter’s tired expression and the cute little love handle on her tummy.

“Don’t even say it old man.” Tina warned, seeing the way her father looked at her and knowing what he was thinking in that head of his.

Looking a tad bit older and overweight. “At least you only got two out of three.”

    “Shut up.” Tina pouted.

Ken smiled and kissed the top of Tina’s head. “You give me so much flack about what I eat, but you’re also guilty of not watching your diet. I want you to live long too.”

    “Daddy?”

    “Hm?”

“I’m only planning to hate her for three weeks..”

“So you’ve said.” Ken had to smile at his daughter’s naivety. You can never put a deadline on your emotions, you just cannot. If there’s a switch to turn off love, anger, bitterness and other intense feelings – we’d be living in a world without pain; some place not really worth living in. How the heck will people learn important life lessons if they didn’t get hurt? “Those three weeks will be the most miserable in your life..”

“You have no idea.” Tina muttered weakly, agreeing. Barely a week in, but she’s already gained five pounds. “Are we cursed?” She blurted out after a while, surprising Ken with her question.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
