Is it Finally the End of the Road – Follow up Chapter 5

“T!” Bette again was stunned by Tina’s admissions.

Tina held up her hand. “Please…let me get this out.”

“Like I said, I think I was so embarrassed that I cared so much about what other’s perceptions were of me…of us, that I took the easy way out. I blamed you for everything. I blamed you for not making me feel safe because you were no longer my own personal ATM machine. I blamed you for making me feel undesirable…I blamed you for what other’s perceived Angie’s otherness to be.” Tina took a deep breath. “You didn’t have a chance Bette…I blamed you for everything.”

“I was mortified that I was using LA society as my compass, but by that time I was so lost I felt it was the only compass I had, so instead of talking with you…really talking with you…instead of listening to my heart, I just kept on following the path of least resistance.”

“How did that path lead you to Henry?” Bette asked, her pain evident.

“I was so bent on conforming, that I not only dismissed the acceptance that you and I had already found among so many heterosexual people who are open hearted and fair minded, but I dismissed the love and acceptance we receive from an entire community of people…our community…just because I was afraid of not having enough…”

Tina’s voice faded and the two women sat in silence for a moment, both absorbing the thoughts she had just shared.

    “Enough what?”

Tina startled at the soft voice filled with pain and confusion.

Tina eyes filled with tears. “Love… money…feeling desired.”

“I loved and desired you Tina.” Bette said with an edge of anger in her voice. “I have always loved…have always desired you…even when I was so lost you were my life!”

“I know that now Bette,” the sadness apparent in Tina’s voice. “But I couldn’t see it then.”

Confused, Bette shook her head. “What do you mean you couldn’t see it?”

“I mean my fears were blinding me to everything you were trying to give me…love, desire, family, safety…all the things I wanted. I was blaming you for everything and couldn’t see past that.”

Tina shrugged her shoulders. “Believe me, when you are sitting in the middle of all that it’s an easy leap…at least in my mind it was…that if I wanted conformity, and couldn’t get there with you…then….”
