Is it Finally the End of the Road – Follow up Chapter 5

Stunned by the barrage, Bette just slowly shook her head. “Why don’t you elaborate on the one’s you’ve got so far,” she said quietly while inside her stomach tightened on hearing the word homophobia.

Taking another deep breath Tina tried to settle herself. She opened her mouth to start, but then looked at Bette, so beautiful even sitting on the hard surface of the elevator. “Are you okay…I mean, are you comfortable?” she asked, knowing just how urgent it can get for a pregnant woman when she needs to urinate.

Tina’s question caused Bette to wiggle a little bit, but she was touched by her concern. “I’m okay for now, but…” She smiled, “I reserve the right to give you a different answer at my discretion.”

“Fair enough,” Tina laughed, appreciating Bette’s attempt to lighten the mood.

“Okay…are you sure you want to hear all this? It could take awhile,” she said still smiling.

“I think we have some time,” Bette responded dryly.

“Right…” Tina took a deep breath.

“Karma is obvious. You cheated on me, I cheated on you, I cheated on Helena, Henry cheated on me…and the wheels on the bus go round and round.”

Bette furrowed her brows at the reference to the children’s song. “Do you really believe our past cheating will keep going around?”

Looking Bette in the eye, Tina answered with a strong, clear voice. “No, I don’t think that you or I will ever cheat on a partner again. I think we have both paid a huge price to the karma God’s. I am afraid though that Henry’s bus ride is just starting out.”

Bette didn’t say anything to that, just silently nodded her head encouraging Tina to continue.

“Let’s see….” Tina leaned back resting her head against the side of the elevator wall. “It was stupid, arrogant, dismissive, homophobic, and a host of other words to think that all I had to do to wipe away my insecurities and fears was to be with a man. That somehow his mere presence would ensure my safety in this world, and that Angie’s scary ‘otherness’ would just disappear.”

Tina shook her head in disgust. “I was so busy blaming you for everything going on inside of me, that after awhile I started to believe what I was saying. I was so lost in my fears that you would cheat on me again…”
