Is it Finally the End of the Road – Follow up Chapter 5

    “Henry could.” Bette whispered.

“Yeah,” Tina whispered back. “I convinced myself that living with a man would give me the normality, the safety I was aching for. I knew I was desirable to men. That part came easy. So, I convince myself that I could return the attraction men had for me. But, as soon as I got that in my head, my heart started fighting back. And once my head and heart began battling, I was so busy fighting myself I had nothing left for our relationship. I couldn’t accept or even see what you were trying to give…and I think at that point I didn’t want to.”

Tina locked eyes with Bette, hoping all the love…all the sincerity she felt was showing through. “Bette I hope that one day you will be able to forgive me for what I did to you…to us. I hope that one day you will forgive me for thinking even for a second that having a white daddy would help Angelica understand herself…where she came from…the love that was behind the decision to choose the donor we did. For thinking that living in suburbia, away from the very people who loved her unconditionally would give her the sense of safety, of pride, or of self confidence she has every right to feel.”

Tears filled Tina’s eyes. “I broke apart our family so Angie and I could feel ‘normal’, when it’s your exquisite uniqueness…the uniqueness of our love…and the uniqueness of our daughter that I love so much! I broke apart our family so Angie could feel ‘normal’, yet tried to take her away from the one person who could help her achieve that! How idiotic was that?!”

There were so many thoughts and feelings coursing through Bette. She had moved on with her life…she had a great relationship with Angie…she had surprised herself by the fulfillment she received working in the appraisals and acquisitions department at Citibank…she was in awe of the baby growing inside her…but her heart would always belong to Tina. It pained her to hear how much Tina had gone through…it pained her that she hadn’t been able to help Tina find her way when she needed Bette the most.

Bette scrunched up her nose. “I hate the word ‘normal.’
