    Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)

    “Only when you tell me.”

Bette lifted Tina’s hand and kissed it before setting it back down on the table. “Alright, you win. I’ll talk to my father, you talk to yours. I doubt that both of them will be willing to have us for Thanksgiving, but if they both agree, I guess we’ll flip for it or something. Otherwise, he who agrees will have the honor of hosting us for Thanksgiving dinner. Deal?”

Tina grinned. “Have I told you I loved you yet this morning?”

    “Not yet.”

Tina came around the table and sat on Bette’s lap and kissed her. “Thank you.”

Bette sat in her office, toying with a pen, trying to think of what she would say to Melvin.

She would never let on to Tina, but she had dreaded making this call. Not because she didn’t want Melvin to meet Tina, but because she feared rejection. Again.

Through the years, she had tried twice to introduce Melvin to women she was serious about. He had been cold, unreceptive, unwilling to accept the fact that she was a lesbian. Tina meant more to her than those past relationships ever did. She wanted Melvin to accept Tina more than anything – but deep down she knew that he wouldn’t.

Still, Tina had been so sweetly excited that morning at the prospect of meeting Melvin, Bette didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was probably not the best idea. She had alluded more than once to the way that Melvin carefully constructed his reality and only saw what he wanted to see. And as far as he was concerned, Bette was not a lesbian as long as he never accepted it.

Bette sighed and picked up the phone, dialling a number that had never changed since she had learned the ten digits as a little girl. The phone rang once… twice…

“Hello?” the gravelly voice of her father rumbled down the wire.

“Daddy? It’s me,” Bette said, knowing he would recognize her voice. Kit never called him “Daddy” anymore.

“Elizabeth,” he said, sounding pleased. “How are you?”

    “I’m well, Daddy. And you?”

“The years are catching up to me, but I can’t really complain,” he said. “Is everything alright?”

    1. Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)

    2. Poignant…truthful, with the tinge of hope and joy. Thanks for reminding us that Thanksgiving is about love. Well done OMalley! You’re the queen of holiday stories. :)

    3. Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks

    4. That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx

    5. Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
