    Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)

“I know she did Daddy,” Bette said. “I miss her, too.”

There was a short pause and Melvin cleared his throat. “You haven’t answered the question, Elizabeth. Shall we be expecting you for Thanksgiving or not?”

“Well, Daddy, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I’d like to come… and bring someone with me. Someone who is very anxious to meet you. You see, she and I are -”

“I see,” Melvin interrupted. “I don’t think your aunt really wants any new people, Elizabeth. You know how she can be.”

Bette’s heart sank. Remembering Tina’s face that morning as she and Bette had discussed their fathers and how happy she had been at the idea of meeting Bette’s stiff, traditional and utterly boring family was enough to make Bette give convincing her father one more try, for Tina’s sake.

“Oh, come on, Daddy,” Bette said, striving to keep her tone light. “You know there will be far too much food for just the three of you. Tina – that’s her name, Daddy – well she very much wants to meet you. It would mean a great deal to her. And to me too,” Bette finished, her voice quiet. “Please, Daddy.”

“I think not,” Melvin said simply. “Thanksgiving will be as it always has been.”

“How it’s been since Mother left us, you mean,” Bette said, wincing at the words as they came out. “Completely stripped of any meaning but the ritual of going through the same motions year in and year out?”

“You are welcome, Elizabeth,” her father said sternly, over-talking her. “You and your sister and nephew, and I’m afraid that is all.”

    “Alright, Daddy.”

“Goodbye, Elizabeth. And do let me know if you decide to join us.”

“I will,” Bette whispered, hanging up and looking at the phone. Tina’s sweet and smiling face flashed through her memory once more, making her father’s rejection tear at her heart. What am I going to tell her?

Tina sat down on her side of the bed in their sunny bedroom and looked down at the phone in her hand. She was suddenly feeling a little unsure of herself. She had mostly wanted to meet Bette’s family – she wasn’t too keen on Bette meeting hers.

    1. Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)

    2. Poignant…truthful, with the tinge of hope and joy. Thanks for reminding us that Thanksgiving is about love. Well done OMalley! You’re the queen of holiday stories. :)

    3. Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks

    4. That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx

    5. Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
