Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)
“Tina…” Bette reached across the table and took Tina’s hand. “Of course I do. I love you, you know that. But to be perfectly honest, I’m happy with the way things are. I told you about my father. It’s complicated.”
Tina returned the pressure on Bette’s hand. Selfishly, she liked having the reassurance that Bette wasn’t ashamed of her and that she was loved. “You’ve given me a lengthy description, yes. But that wouldn’t be the same as meeting him and knowing him. I want to know all about where you came from. Aren’t you the least bit curious about my dad?”
Bette’s beautiful mouth twisted into a smile. “He does sound like a colorful character.” Tina sensed that she was gaining ground.
“That’s one way of putting it,” Tina mused. Her father was a former mayor who had clawed his way up to state senator, and was now living out an uneasy retirement on a sprawling cattle ranch in New Mexico. He fancied himself a lover of the land now that his political career was over. “Just think of all the ways you could grill him about his policy decisions after dinner,” Tina said, “Maybe even get some insider stories on the shady deals he undoubtedly made in office… if we were to go down there for Thanksgiving.” She knew that politics was one of Bette’s interests and that her political views, like Tina’s, were in direct contrast to those of her Republican father.
Bette gave Tina a scrutinizing look. “You’re really serious about this, aren’t you?”
“I am. It’s important to me.”
“What about his new wife?” Bette said with a hint of skepticism. “You told me that you couldn’t stand her. Would you really want to put up with her for a long weekend?”
Tina cringed slightly. Her father’s new wife, Patricia, was young enough to be Tina’s sister. As flawed as her father was, Tina would never think Patricia was good enough for him. She was a thin, hard, gold-digger type. Tina loathed her, but did her best to be civil, even cordial, for her father’s sake.
“I would, yeah.” Tina said after a moment of internal debate.
Bette smiled at her. “You’re sweet, did you know that?”

That is just so cute!
Bittersweet but well written.
Both fathers are jerks. Loved the story
Sigh..but as Tina had put it,..”Well that’s that” …And at least … THEY HAVE EACH OTHER.
10 Stars.Thank you.
I wonder of all those family members out there who practice their bigotry really get just how much love they are missing out on?
That was sweet and bittersweet. Where are the other girls in this story? A little Alice is always nice.
Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)
Poignant…truthful, with the tinge of hope and joy. Thanks for reminding us that Thanksgiving is about love. Well done OMalley! You’re the queen of holiday stories. :)
Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks
That was great, poor Bette and Tina, they are so sweet. Thanks for sharing this with us!
That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx
Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
So wonderful and excellently written. THank you.
Sad. But someday they will come around. Melvin did, on his deathbed, but still.
Sad that people can be so closeminded ugh…when people happiness is all that matters
