Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)
“Well, you know how you told me you wanted to spend Thanksgiving with my family?”
“Yeah,” Tina said slowly, not quite following.
“We can spend a few minutes with a member of mine,” Bette said with a mischievous look.
“Oh yeah? Just by watching?”
“Yep.”
“What, you have a long, lost cousin in the NFL or something?”
“Not quite,” Bette raid, raising the volume.
“”Ladies and gentlemen,” the television announcer said. “Please rise for our National Anthem.”
“O, say can you see…” a smoky voice belted out. The camera switched to a close-up shot of the singer.
“Kit?!” Tina cried, gaping at the screen. “She’s singing on a nationally televised game?”
“Yes,” Bette said with pride. “The Turkey Bowl. It’s not quite the Super Bowl, but…”
“This is amazing!” Tina cried. They grasped Bette’s hands and they gave Kit their full attention as she sang the anthem. They looked at each other as she finished. Tina had tears in her eyes.
“That was amazing,” she said, swiping a stray tear away. “How long have you known about this?”
“Just a few days. Kit’s manager called on her to be a replacement for someone else who couldn’t make it.”
“Wonderful. I’m so glad your sister got this opportunity.”
“Now you know why, a few weeks ago, she told us she couldn’t come over for dinner.”
“Yeah,” Tina said. “About that, Bette. I’m really sorry I ever even brought it up.”
Bette stroked the back of Tina’s hair. “Your dad?”
Tina shook her head. “I never realized he would act that way. Be so cruel. Reject you that way. Reject me that way.”
Bette gave her a sad smile. “I knew exactly what my father was going to say. I tried to pretend that maybe he would be different this time, but…”
Tina nodded. “Sorry I put you through that.”
Bette put an arm around Tina and drew her closer. Tina drew her feet up on the couch and rested her head above Bette’s heart.
“Forget about me,” Bette said. “I’m just sorry things didn’t work out the way you wanted them to. I only want you to be happy, T.”
Tina lifted her head and placed a gentle kiss on Bette’s lips. “I know. And I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Tina nestled back down and sighed. “Aside from Kit… I guess we’re out own family now, huh?”
“Yes,” Bette agreed. “And we’ll spend our holidays together. That’s all I want.”
“Being with you is all that matters to me,” Tina said. Bette kissed the top of her head and Tina smiled. Every other plan she could possibly make would never live up to just being with Bette, like this. She closed her eyes with thanks that on this day she had the only one she would ever need.
The End

That is just so cute!
Bittersweet but well written.
Both fathers are jerks. Loved the story
Sigh..but as Tina had put it,..”Well that’s that” …And at least … THEY HAVE EACH OTHER.
10 Stars.Thank you.
I wonder of all those family members out there who practice their bigotry really get just how much love they are missing out on?
That was sweet and bittersweet. Where are the other girls in this story? A little Alice is always nice.
Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)
Poignant…truthful, with the tinge of hope and joy. Thanks for reminding us that Thanksgiving is about love. Well done OMalley! You’re the queen of holiday stories. :)
Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks
That was great, poor Bette and Tina, they are so sweet. Thanks for sharing this with us!
That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx
Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
So wonderful and excellently written. THank you.
Sad. But someday they will come around. Melvin did, on his deathbed, but still.
Sad that people can be so closeminded ugh…when people happiness is all that matters
