He scoffed, speaking to Jamal.  “That certainly doesn’t fit the mood.”

    “Ed,” Jamal warned.

“Is something wrong?  Do you want me to tell Kit to stop,” Tina asked worriedly.

    “Don’t worry about him, Tina.”

“Oh, yeah.  Ignore me, Tina.  I’m just a bit of a Christmas carol geek.”

“Definitely not “a bit of” a geek.  A full fledged geek,” Jamal corrected.

“I don’t recognize that one,” Tina replied.

Kit had played through the tune a few times, and Bette had very softly sung the words to Kit. The two sisters worked together and finally were able to put them all in place.

“It’s old.  Not common in America.  Sad.”

    “Sad?” Tina asked.

“It’s a lament by Mary.  Herod learns from the Magi that there is a King of the Jews, so he orders that every boy child be killed.  Mary is singing because her baby is going to be killed.”

Tina looked puzzled, trying to remember her bible stories.

“The flight into Egypt solved the problem.”

    “Oh.”

“I was in a choral group that used to sing this.  I couldn’t get through it, though, after we had Lucas.”

“It’s called ‘Mary’s Lament’?’ Tina asked.

“No.  It’s the ‘Coventry Carol.’  Sometimes it’s called ‘Lully Lullay.’”

    Tina nodded.

Ed groaned. “Don’t tell me she is going to sing it.”

Tina looked towards the piano and it looked as if Bette was getting ready to do just that.

“That must be it,” she muttered.

    “It?” Jamal asked.

“Bette was in a contest as a teen and she lost because he judges decided that the song she had picked was too sad,”

“That certainly would qualify,” Ed observed.  “So, she sings this?”

“I don’t think she has sung it in 25 years.”

“So, she’s never sung it since Angelica was born?”

Tina looked at Ed with a questioning look, “No.  Why?”

    “Let’s see.”

Bette’s voice wavered as she began singing, but she quickly set herself right and sang strongly.

““Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,

    Bye bye, lully lullay.
